Urban Meyer Ohio State: Hiring of New Coach Will Bring Future Heisman Trophy Win

Justin WeltonNov 27, 2011

Urban Meyer was one of the best coaches in college football before taking time off because of health issues. He proved that by winning two national championships and making other BCS Bowl games in his career.

He had talented players that won him championships, but he was the one that created them. His spread-you-out type of offense brought one Heisman Trophy winner to Florida and it would without question bring another one to Columbus.

Meyer made Tim Tebow and Alex Smith stars at the college level. Both quarterbacks were used perfectly in Meyer’s system.

Tebow put up a combined 3,805 yards and 35 total touchdowns in 2009. In his Heisman year (2007) Tebow put up more than 4,000 yards and 55 total touchdowns.

Smith led the Utah Utes to a BCS Bowl game in 2004. He racked up more than 3,500 yards of total offense and 42 touchdowns.

Both quarterbacks have been average at best—depending on whom you talk to—in the NFL. Meyer turned two average quarterbacks into stars in college football.

Tebow and Smith ended up being first-round NFL draft picks. You don’t think that will sell to recruits? Not only would kids be willing to go to Ohio State because of the history, but they know that Meyer can turn them into potential first-round draft selections.

Meyer knows exactly what type of recruit to bring in to play the quarterback position. He will be able to find somebody to run his offense to a tee.

Another reason why Meyer will create a Heisman winner in Columbus is because of Meyer’s success as a head coach. He has a 124-23 (.819) regular season record and a 7-1 postseason record—he wins football games at a great clip.

Heisman winners come from winning teams. Meyer will have his team in the BCS National Championship race within a few years. Because his team will be near the top of the rankings every season, a Heisman Trophy winner will inevitably come from Columbus.

Just look at this season, for example. If LSU had a player that was putting up unbelievable offensive numbers, he would probably be the Heisman winner. Ohio State will have great numbers from many different players in Meyer’s system. They will be on top of the rankings just about every year. They are bound to grab a Heisman winner.

Ohio State is the trend-setter when it comes to the Heisman Trophy. They are tied with Notre Dame (seven) in number of Heisman Trophy winners. Archie Griffin won the Heisman Trophy twice in 1974 and 1975. He is still the only person to achieve that feat in college football history.

Given Meyer’s offensive style, winning ways and the history of the program, Ohio State would definitely have at least one Heisman Trophy winner in the upcoming future. I wouldn’t doubt Meyer’s ability to coach the game of football. He’s one of the best to ever to do it.
