BCS Bowl Predictions: Alabama vs. LSU Is Only Matchup That Makes Sense

Josh SchochNov 27, 2011

When the BCS National Championship Game rolls around, the only feasible teams playing would be Alabama and LSU.

I know that these two teams have played before and trust me, I don't think LSU should have to beat Alabama on a neutral field after they have already beat them in Tuscaloosa, but these two teams are head-and-shoulders above the competition.

Alabama is 11-1, including 7-1 in the incredible SEC. They have beaten four Top 25 teams by 16 points or more, and they have made a difficult schedule look easy.

The only slip up for the Crimson Tide came against LSU at home. They played the Tigers tough throughout the game, but the game was sent to overtime and they eventually lost because they missed four field goals.

Alabama actually did better than LSU in just about every statistical category. They had more first downs, more total yards, more time of possession, did better on third down and had fewer penalties. If they had simply made three of their first five field goals, the Crimson Tide would have won this game.

Alabama's defense is the best in the country, allowing only 8.8 points per game. They also have the nation's No. 16 offense, scoring 36.0 points per game. Alabama is the only team that can even challenge this LSU squad, and the teams must meet up in the National Championship Game.

LSU has the second-best defense in the country, allowing only 10.6 points per game. They also score 38.2 points per game, which is No. 13 in the country.

The Tigers have faced three teams in the top three this season, beating them all. They have beaten seven Top 25 teams and have gone 11-0 including 7-0 in the SEC.

Once LSU beats Georgia (and even if they don't), they will retain their No. 1 ranking. The Tigers are clearly the best team in the nation, and there is only one team that can challenge them: Alabama.

While I would hate to see an all-SEC matchup, the fact remains that LSU and Alabama are the best teams in the nation and they deserve to play in the National Championship Game.
