Seahawks Upset Jets 13-3 in Holmgren's last game in Seattle

NFLGridironGabDec 21, 2008

The conditions were sloppy, as this game was played in driving wet snow. You knew the Seahawks would show up for their coach in this one, as it was his last home game as coach of the Seahawks. It was the defense that came up with huge plays for the Hawks all game long, while Seneca Wallace made enough plays to get the win.

The weather wreaked havoc on both offenses, as ball security was an issue.  Seahawks’ running backs fumbled on consecutive drives in the second quarter, including a costly one in the red zone by Leonard Weaver. The Seahawks got a big lift from running back Maurice Morris, who helped them control the clock, with 116 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Josh Wilson chipped in with 2 interceptions, while Daryl Tapp had 1.5 sacks.

Brett Favre did not have a very good game, although he didn’t receive great protection from his line, which gave up four sacks. You would think that he would be at home playing in the snow, after his years in Green Bay, but his age is clearly catching up with him.

The offense actually moved the ball effectively in the first half, but the Seattle defense took over down the stretch.

The result of this game has huge implications on the AFC East playoff picture. The Jets no longer control their own destiny, and will not only have to beat the Miami Dolphins at home next week, but will also have to hope that the Bills upset the Patriots.

The Jets got off to a good start offensively, driving down into the red zone on their first drive, but only got a field goal. They wouldn’t know it then, but that would be their only score of the day. The only touchdown, came courtesy of a John Carlson two yard reception just before halftime.

It didn’t affect the outcome of the game, but Eric Mangini made a controversial decision when he decided not to kick a 50 yard field goal, after Jay Feely’s 45 yard field goal was called back from a delay of game penalty.

It was controversial because Feely’s 45 yarder had enough leg to be good from 55 yards, let alone 50. Down 10-3 in the fourth quarter, Favre would get a chance to lead his team on a game winning drive. On fourth and long, Favre threw a perfect pass to Laveranues Coles in double coverage, but Coles couldn’t hang on for the first down.

The Seahawks would immediately be in field goal range after the turnover, and an Olindo Mare field goal would clinch the game.
