Chelsea 3-0 Wolves: Grading Andre Villas-Boas' Players
Chelsea convincingly defeated Wolves 3-0 on Saturday, but it was a weakened side without Jamie O'Hara, Richard Stearman and Stephen Hunt.
Finally some relief for André Villas-Boas, but how well did the Chelsea players play?
Here are my grades for the game. Feel free to comment below.
Goalkeeper: Petr Čech
1 of 13Grade: B
Aside from coming out to sweep in the 36th minute in 59th minute and two saves, Petr Čech didn't have much to do—after all, Wolves only had two shots on goal.
Though he did make a great save to deny Stephen Ward.
Right-Back: Branislav Ivanović
2 of 13Grade: B
Branislav Ivanović could accelerate past George Elokobi, which was an worrying indication of how slow the Cameroonian full-back is.
The Serbian had a solid game and, at one point, made a back-heel pass to Raul Meireles, which shows how comfortable he has become at right-back.
I have no idea why he was substituted for José Bosingwa—it was almost as if André Villas-Boas wanted to just use up his three substitutions.
Centre-Back: John Terry
3 of 13Grade: B+
John Terry took advantage of Roger Johnson's slack marking to head in Chelsea's first. It was this goal which allowed André Villas-Boas' men to gain momentum.
Terry's leadership of this defence was better, but truth be told, it was against a toothless Wolves attack.
Purposely picked up a yellow card to clean his record.
I wonder if the FA will look into it because UEFA took disciplinary action against José Mourinho when Real Madrid adopted the tactics.
Centre-Back: David Luiz
4 of 13Grade: B
Relatively quiet game from David Luiz, whose only concern was being beaten by Stephen Ward in the 52nd minute.
Left-Back: Ashley Cole
5 of 13Grade: B+
Ashley Cole was solid in defence, made many incisive passes—one of which was an assist to Juan Mata in the 45th minute—and was constantly motoring down the left flank.
Would have provided more assists or even scored a goal if Didier Drogba wasn't so wasteful.
Defensive Midfielder: Oriol Romeu
6 of 13Grade: B+
Oriol Romeu made 92 percent of his passes, four interceptions and three successful tackles. Good game from the Spaniard.
His passing patterns are similar to John Obi Mikel, but he's more mobile and I envision a box-to-box role in the future.
Akin to the role Sami Khedira played at Stuttgart.
Centre Midfielder: Raul Meireles
7 of 13Grade: C-
Raul Meireles wasted possession time after time after time.
He gave away possession 11 times, but the passes he did make were not incisive enough to compensate for him giving the ball away.
Centre Midfielder: Ramires
8 of 13Grade: A
Relentless running Ramires.
RRR running all over the place, making three interceptions, six...yes, six successful tackles and his lung-bursting runs into the opposing box.
What he needs to work on is his efficiency in front of goal because he could easily score 10-15 goals a season.
Right Forward: Daniel Sturridge
9 of 13Grade: A
Please...please...please play Daniel Sturridge as a centre forward.
If this guy can score seven goals starting out wide, how many goals will he score centrally?
Centre Forward: Didier Drogba
10 of 13Grade: F
Horrible. Wasteful. Greedy. Out of sync with the rest of the team.
Where was the aerial presence? Only one header won.
Had four shots, didn't get one on goal.
Time to play Daniel Sturridge centrally.
Left Forward: Juan Mata
11 of 13Grade: A+
Without Juan Mata, Chelsea wouldn't have won 3-0.
I cannot understand why he isn't played centrally in a 4-3-1-2. Play him as the 1.
He is the one when it comes to providing incisive passes and sparking this Chelsea attack.
He would have had four assists if Didier Drogba wasn't so wasteful.
Substitutes
12 of 13Frank Lampard: Would have expected more incisive passing from him when he did come on to prove a point.
José Bosingwa: Was tidy in his passing, but I have no idea why he came on. There was no need for him to come on especially with
Fernando Torres: Looked lively and is desperate for a goal. Considering how dire Didier Drogba was, one expects Torres to start the next game.
Your Opinion
