Brian Schottenheimer Extension: What Are the New York Jets Thinking?

Jesse ReedNov 25, 2011

The New York Jets extended offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's contract for at least one more season, NFL.com reports. This news baffles me. What are the Jets thinking?

Fans of the Jets will gladly tell you how much they can't stand Schottenheimer's play-calling. I agree with their assessment. He is not a good play-caller.

When asked recently about his young quarterback, Mark Sanchez, and the struggles on offense, Schottenheimer suggested that Sanchez simply needs to make better decisions.

In my humble opinion, the people that need to make better decisions are the ones hiring and firing for the Jets organization.

Schottenheimer and head coach Rex Ryan have treated Sanchez like he was some kind of Manning-esque elite talent at quarterback all season long. Schottenheimer has repeatedly asked Sanchez to run a pass-happy offense, while failing to realize he doesn't have an elite passer to run such an offense.

The Jets have been a team that has won in the past on the merits of a solid running game and excellent defense. Now, they are attempting to take the NFL by storm with their version of the "best show on turf" except the players can't keep up with the system.

This decision by the Jets to extend Schottenheimer's contract shows that the organization is delusional from the top down about their own talent. I am sorry for all the Jets fans out there who have had to deal with this, and now they will suffer for at least one more season under the inept guidance of Schottenheimer.
