Urban Meyer Ohio State: Hiring Meyer Would Make Buckeyes an Elite Program

Josh SchochNov 25, 2011

Rumor has it that Urban Meyer will be named the head coach of Ohio State football on Sunday, even though he's still denying it—if that holds true he will make the program an elite one.

Meyer is one of the best coaches in college football; he won two national championships with the Florida Gators during his time with the school.

Meyer then retired at an early age and spent a few years away from coaching while working as an analyst for ESPN. Now it appears that he may return home to Ohio and take control of an Ohio State Buckeyes program that has just had one of the toughest years in its history.

The Buckeyes still face an NCAA investigation, Jim Tressel has been fired and quarterback Terrelle Pryor has gone to the NFL.

Now rumors are swirling that Ohio may be bringing in Meyer, who is possibly the only coach available who can turn this program around.

The pending NCAA investigation would make it difficult for other coaches to recruit, but Meyer is one of the best recruiters in history, and he will be able to work around that setback.

There was once speculation that Meyer was breaking rules in his recruitment of players because he was so successful. Bringing in seven of the top 10 defensive recruits and five in the top five—to go along with offensive playmakers and protection for them—made other coaches suspicious of him. Yet he did it all without breaking a single rule.

Meyer may be the only man who can turn this program around. He is such a good recruiter and would probably be able to bring in talented players that interim head coach Luke Fickell cannot.

His impressive recruiting is not the only thing Meyer brings to the table, however. He knows how to coach every member of a team so that they bring their best, week in and week out, and he also knows how to coach a team so that the players work together.

Meyer is the best available coach, and if rumors are true and he does go to OSU, he will surely bring the Buckeyes back to glory.
