Interactive Tournament: Lightweights Semifinals
Exactly one week ago, the first interactive tournament article was written and published. Thanks to the readers, many voted were cast to determine the winners of four quarterfinal fights in the lightweight division. I am glad of how the article turned out and that's in most part thanks to you because, without the votes, this interactive tournament would be nothing.
Hopefully, you will continue to cast your votes in the following weeks and more people will read and vote. With that said, let's get to last week's results.
Tyson Griffin defeated Joe Stevenson by a 9-2 vote.
Sean Sherk defeated Nate Diaz by a 9-2 vote.
Kenny Florian defeated Clay Guida by a 10-1 vote.
Frankie Edgar defeated Roger Huerta by a 7-4 vote.
Now that Griffin, Sherk, Florian and Edgar have all advanced, it's time for the semi-finals to begin.
Semifinals, Fight One: Tyson Griffin vs. Sean Sherk
Both men defeated their quarter-final opponents with relative ease and find themselves face to face...again. Griffin and Sherk fought in a really exciting fight at UFC 90. Both men fought their hearts out and Sean Sherk won a unanimous decision.
For anybody who saw the fight, they know the fight was much closer then a unanimous decision and that it could have went either way. Sean Sherk decided he would strike with Griffin instead of taking him down and that work for him...well barely. Tyson Griffin still landed some solid blows that rocked Sherk, but in the end, what did Sherk have to complain about? he won.
The interesting question here is, what would happen in a rematch? The first fight was so close that a second fight could go the other way. Sean Sherk would probably have the same game-plan or do the same thing that he did in the first fight since that won him the match. Tyson griffin would probably change his game-plan and make adjustments to pull off a victory.
Tyson Griffin could go in there and be more aggressive and possibly knockout Sherk winning him the fight. The possibilities are endless in a second fight between these two men.
How do you think a rematch between Tyson Griffin and Sean Sherk would go?
Semifinals, Fight Two: Kenny Florian vs. Frankie Edgar
Both these fighters are good at imposing their will and executing their game-plan at perfection... or almost. Kenny Florian has evolved to the point where he has gotten good at everything and posses a serious problem to all lightweight fighters, but Edgar is determined and aggressive and could possibly throw Florian off his game.
Frankie Edgar has underrated striking skills, has great wrestling abilities and has completely cancelled the skills of any BJJ fighter he has stepped in the octagon with. What does that leave for Florian?
Kenny could probably use his size advantage to dominate the striking. Florian has shown devastating ground and pound in the past but I doubt he would take Frankie down. Edgar is a smart wrestler, the complete opposite of Guida who is an aggressive fighter that pushes the pace and takes the fight down. Edgar will create opportunities and counter with takedowns when his opponents least expect it.
Who wins...Kenny Florian or Frankie Edgar?
So there you go, the semifinals are set with two explosive fights. Please cast your votes for the two fighters you think would win the fight and fight in the finals next week.
