Reasons Why Ohio State Football Will Win Big Ten in Two Years

Sam CatronNov 24, 2011

Ohio State football is bound for success and quicker than you think.

In the past calendar year, there have been several actions/consequences that will push the Buckeyes to win the Big Ten title before 2014.

Most people have gotten tired of hearing about Ohio State football due to controversies and scandals, but the headlines from here on out will be positive. Here are five reasons why you will see the Buckeyes football program hoisting the newly named Stagg Championship Trophy.

Tattoo-Gate and Gold Pants Scandal

1 of 5

If choking in BCS games wasn't enough, a scandal at Ohio State finally polished things off.

The purging of the Ohio State program was the best way to turn that program around. Jim Tressel had reached the end of his rope at OSU. QB Terrelle Pryor and the others were on their last legs as well.

Facing a five game suspension, Pryor decided to forgo his last year as a Buckeye for the NFL. Truly a move that only a selfish player would make. Hope that works out for you in Oakland.

When these two situations came out, Ohio State had no choice but to cut their losses and move on.

They have since found a true freshmen QB who has elite-QB talent and other younger players in the program-including an underclassmen scattered throughout the depth chart.

Young Guns: Braxton Miller and Company

2 of 5

With no clear starter in Columbus, OH, Wayne High School standout Braxton Miller emerged as the best option for the Buckeye program. Miller beat out RS Sr. Joe Bauserman to pilot the Buckeyes until the end of the season.

Miller is an explosive dual-threat QB who is leading the team in rushing and passing. As he continues to grow as a passer, he will become a terror in the Big Ten.

Alongside Miller are a host of underclassmen who will continue to grow and mature, including 12 starters who have either Freshmen or Sophomore eligibility.

No Drops in Recruiting

3 of 5

As the 2011 recruiting season closed, Ohio State finished with four players in the Top 150, led by Braxton Miller. They finished at #11 in the enrolled commitment rankings.

Even with a coaching change and a huge scandal, Ohio State quietly sits at #19 in recruiting right now. This is the fourth year in a row they have been inside the top 25 in recruiting.

They have already committed a Top 150 player in this year's class, and are on the list for several other top players.

All stats were taken from Rivals.

Weakening of Other Big Ten Programs

4 of 5

With the departure of Joe Paterno at Penn State, nobody knows where that program will be in the next two years. I assume they will take a catastrophic type punch in recruiting and retention.

Wisconsin is senior heavy and will lose stud QB Russell Wilson at the end of the year, and replacing a Heisman candidate isn't the easiest task ever.

Michigan State is losing double digit seniors this year as well.

And as always there are the bottom dwellers of Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, and others.

Urban Meyer

5 of 5

If the rumors are true, Ohio State will be back with authority.

Urban Meyer, one of the best college coaches of the past decade, is rumored to have been offered and accepted the head coaching position at Ohio State. (Original story here.)

Urban Meyer is 104-23 since 2001 including two Mountain West Conference Championships, two SEC Championships and two BCS National Championships.

He is very well-respected in the coaching community, and can get almost any assistant coach in the country to serve underneath him. He has a wealth of knowledge, as he showed as an ESPN college football commentator, and has won at all levels.

Meyer is a relentless leader and was once standing atop the best college football conference in the country. The Big Ten isn't close to the SEC in recruiting, and the elite players in the country will flock to him.
