The 2011 Oklahoma Sooners football season opened with lofty expectations and big victories.
Sooners fans smiled as they nestled in their beds with visions of championships dancing in their heads.
Lately, however, pleasant dreams have been displaced by rather disturbing nightmares.
Quarterbacks Seth Doege of Texas Tech and Robert Griffin III of Baylor invaded these nocturnal images and destroyed the Sooner Schooner like Saint Nick's evil alter-ego on a psychotic sleigh ride, punishing his naughty list with a shock-and-awe bombing campaign.
Take heart, Sooners fans, and put things into perspective. The holiday season is a time to be thankful for our blessings and realize that while we love our team, it is, after all, only a game, and there is a bigger picture.
The University of Oklahoma has had many blessings over the years, and we can all be thankful that, hey—at least we aren't Longhorns fans!
With that said, I have a Christmas wish list that I am sending out to the real Santa.
1) Another Big 12 Championship
I mean not only beating Iowa State and Oklahoma State, but absolutely destroying both teams and taking away their will to compete. I want to see our opponents curled in a fetal position and sucking their thumbs on the sidelines by the end of these games as Stoops' Troops once again prove that the Sooners are the undisputed kings of the conference.
2) A Sports Psychologist on the Sooners' Staff
Oklahoma has had the overall edge in talent in both losses. However, the mental aspect of the game has been neglected, and professional help is required to get these young players to focus and play to their full potential.
3) Alabama and Arkansas to Get Blown Out in Their Final Games
Sorry, Tide and Hogs fans, but the thought of an all-SEC BCS Championship game and another long offseason of ESPN fawning all over the conference like Chris Matthews with his leg-tingling man-crush on the president is too much to bear.
4) A Tulsa Victory over Houston
Tulsa would be the undefeated team if they could have switched schedules with Houston. TU is our little brother, and any time an Okie team whips a team from Texas, it just makes the world make more sense. Besides, I am taking my son and his friends to this game.
5) Virginia Tech and Oregon to Lose Their Conference Title Games
VT has been lucky to only have one loss to this point, playing in the second-worst BCS conference. No Sooner likes Oregon after being robbed by the officiating crew in Eugene a few years back.
6) Notre Dame to Beat Stanford
While it is hard for an OU fan to ever pull for Notre Dame, another loss for the Cardinal would again throw the BCS standings into chaos.
If Kris Kringle can deliver everything on this wish list, the BCS standings will have to pick from multiple two-loss teams when choosing an opponent for LSU in the BCS title game.
All of the sudden, with their superior strength of schedule, the Sooners may be sitting pretty once again. Who knows what could happen?
Hey, it's Christmas season. It is time to say happy birthday to Jesus and give thanks. Enjoy it no matter what happens, because it only comes around once a year.
