Brett Favre: West Coast Jinx?

Raider Card AddictDec 20, 2008

For Brett, the questions have to be getting annoying by now. What is it with playing on the west coast that has him at 0-3, or 1-4 if you lump Denver and Arizona into the mix?

Some wonder if it's the overland travel that's wearing him down. Nothing out of the ordinary, but at his age, it might be the creaking and popping that's slowing him down. Or, in an effort to make the Jets look good, he's trying too hard to perform, and getting sloppy.

In what should have been easy games, the Jets lost to the 49ers and Raiders, when the 49ers had four wins, and Oakland only had one. The loss to Denver at home couldn't have come at a worse time. After getting past Buffalo, thanks in part to some luck and a late TD, they should have an easy game against Seattle, right?

Don't bank on it, considering the coach is Favre's old sage, Mike Holmgren.

One thing the Jets need to realize, and soon, is that not one person is going to do everything for the team. The Jets have a good running game, with Thomas Jones. They have decent WRs in Cotchery and Coles. And for the return game, Leon Washington has over 1000 yards on 40 returns.

Favre, for his actions, has 21 TDs and 17 INTs. Not exactly brilliant numbers, but it shows signs that if the team gets behind and he tries to do it all himself...to quote a Packer fan, "He throws the prettiest interceptions I've ever seen".

So, how does Favre and company solve this problem?

Easy. Take the ball out of his hands. Let the running game set the tempo. Let the offense work. Keep a good balanced attack and spread it around a bit. Favre, for all his travels, should be used to noise. Thomas Jones has had decent numbers wherever he's played, But the team needs to step up if Favre gets wild.

Otherwise, they're going to mess up one of the great storybook seasons in the NFL.

Parting thought: How many people out there thought that after the opening week's game, that the final weeks' game would decide the outcome for the Jets?

Wouldn't Chad Pennington love to end the Jets' season?
