Urban Meyer to Ohio State Rumors: 3 Reasons Meyer Will Be a Bust at Ohio State
The Urban Meyer to Ohio State rumors are getting even hotter as the days go by and the regular season is rapidly coming to a close. Although Meyer has denied accepting a deal or even talking to Ohio State, reports say much different.
Meyer coaching the Buckeyes seems like a great fit and will put Ohio State back on top of the college football world, but there are chances that he could be a bust as well. Although he is a coach with a very impressive resume, it's not a guarantee he will succeed if he takes his talents to the Big Ten.
Here are a couple of reasons why he may fail at Ohio State.
The SEC
I don't doubt that Urban Meyer will be able to go into SEC country and be able to snag a few top recruits. He's a fantastic head coach at a prestigious program and has a great recruiting track record.
But he won't be able to steal all of them, and that's where the SEC comes into play.
Regardless of who coaches the Buckeyes, the SEC will remain king until somebody knocks them off. They've won the last five National Championships and there's a great possibility that they'll make it six with possibly two SEC teams battling it out. SEC recruiting has also gotten even stronger with Texas A&M joining the conference as that gives them more land to roam.
Meyer may do well beating up on the watered-down Big Ten, but he's going to have to take it beyond that to be successful.
Health issues
Urban Meyer left the Florida Gators because of health risks and there were even reports saying that he suffered a heart attack. In 1998 doctors also discovered a arachnoid cyst on his brain and he was also hospitalized for dehydration after losing in the SEC Championship Game.
"It wasn't life-threatening, but the doctors warned that the attacks would continue to flare up under high stress. Urban wasn't nearly as concerned as [his wife] Shelley. "I know you want to be a head coach," she told him, "but if it's going to make you sick and old and crazy? I don't want you to be a head coach.
"
If that's the case somebody better tell him that the Ohio State job is not for him. This job is high-stress, sleepless nights and high expectations included.
Expectations
That leads me to another thing that could have Meyer doomed before he even steps on the Ohio State campus. The expectations are through the roof for Urban Meyer. Buckeye fans are drooling for another Jim Tressel without all the baggage that comes with it.
Meyer is a proven winner and has done almost anything a coach could possibly do, including winning national championships and having a Heisman winner on his team. But it's not even official that he has signed to the university yet, and critics are already asking how long it will be before he takes this team to the promised land.
I don't doubt that he'll be able to get the job done, but the guy needs time and with these expectations he may not get it. What happens if Ohio State struggles early on or doesn't win the Big Ten and loses any chance of winning the National Championship?
Expectations rise even more and that, of course, could trigger more health issues.
