Urban Meyer Ohio State: Why Legendary Coach Will Win with Buckeyes

Eric BowmanNov 23, 2011

There has been much speculation about Urban Meyer becoming the new head coach at Ohio State, and there is no denying that he would be an instant hit and the Buckeyes would revert back to their winning ways.

Winning is everything in sports, and once you get back on that track, it's amazing how much people forget about past problems.

Meyer has always been a winner, and that is something that Ohio State desperately needs.

Multiple media outlets are standing by their sources who claim that Meyer has indeed accepted the job in Columbus.

Sports by Brooks is one of the most adamant ones, stating Meyer will join Ohio State as early as next week.

WKMG in Orlando is claiming Meyer has accepted a 7-year deal worth $40 million. If true, then plenty of Buckeye fans will soon be rejoicing.

There is no confirmation from the man himself, but Meyer was quoted by the Detroit Free Press saying, "If an opportunity like that did come along, I would consider it only because it is home. If something happens at Ohio State, then I would have a decision to make."

It wouldn't be too difficult of a decision to make because Ohio State is one of the top jobs in the country. Sure, the NCAA will be cracking down on the Buckeyes, but it's nothing Meyer can't overcome.

The Twitter-verse has blown up in recent days with all the Meyer to Ohio State talk, and one of the best ones came from ESPN's Colin Cowherd.

Nobody is going to turn down free money like that, even if the winnings were only a dollar. Of course, Meyer would chose Ohio State because there would be no struggles coaching for them.

The former Florida Gators head coach told The Gainesville Sun that there are a few things he would have to think about to return to coaching.

"The concerns are still there. No. 1 — my health. No. 2 — my family. No. 3 — the state of college football."

He left the Gators for health reasons, which is why some refuse to believe he'll return to coaching. It certainly wouldn't sit well with Gator fans if he chose Ohio State.

Still, though, Meyer would undoubtedly have great success at Ohio State, and it wouldn't take him long to get there.

After the offseason mess at Ohio State, the Buckeyes were forced to play without star players for a number of weeks, and interim head coach Luke Fickell just hasn't been cutting it.

Ohio State is having its worst season since 2004, but getting Meyer before the 2011 season is even over would make all the difference in the world.

People would soon forget these troubling times at Ohio State and start dreaming of national championships. You can't really blame them for that if it happens because Meyer's past accolades are great evidence as to why he's the best available coach out there.

To win in college football, you have to be able to recruit. Meyer excels in this area, and he would waste no time in getting elite prospects to come to Columbus.

Even current Buckeye recruits know that if Meyer were to come to Ohio State, he would be outstanding. Some are even hoping he becomes the next head coach because the team would become one of the top programs once again.

Cincinnati Taft defensive end Adolphus Washington recently announced his decision to play for Ohio State. Afterwards, The Plain Dealer asked if he thought Meyer would be his next coach, he responded with, "I hope so."

Meyer's presence at Ohio State would land the Buckeyes a ton of talent, and it would take him very little time to start winning.

Having a big name coach to help handle the rough road ahead would excite not only recruits, but also current players.

This is a coach kids want to play for because he is a winner. When a team is winning, everyone is happy, and Meyer at Ohio State would bring plenty of smiles to fans' faces.

Of course, it would also result in some upset looks from other fans around the Big Ten because they too know that if the Buckeyes hire Meyer, Ohio State will soon be back on top.

You know you've made it in the college football world when you're respected and feared like Meyer is, and that's why the coach would easily win at Ohio State.
