Fantasy Football: Who's Hot and Who's Not at the QB Position?

Professor BushNov 23, 2011

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints top the list of hot quarterbacks.

Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles, Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans and Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears are injured and will not be available to you.

But if you play fantasy football and you own the three hot QBs, you will definitely start them each week. You also know about the three injuries. So if I write about these six players, I won't be telling you anything you don't know.

So let's eliminate these six obvious QBs and discuss others that are hot or not.

Tony Romo: Hot

1 of 6

Recently Tony Romo has not been playing like, well, Tony Romo. In the last four games he has thrown nine touchdown passes versus only one interception.

The standard Yahoo! scoring has only a one-point penalty for an interception. All of the leagues I play in have a higher penalty. In the analysis of various quarterbacks, I am assuming a larger penalty for interceptions.

With the next two games against the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, you should get two good weeks out of Romo before the fantasy playoffs start.

Joe Flacco: Not

2 of 6

Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens is not hot. Over the past four games he has thrown four touchdowns versus three interceptions. He has also fumbled four times and lost two of them.

However, keep Flacco on ice because he will be playing the Indianapolis Colts during the first week of the playoffs and the San Diego Chargers the second week.

Matt Ryan: Hot

3 of 6

Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons is hot. He had over 300 passing yards in each of the last two weeks. The bonus points for reaching that level really helped his production. Over the last three weeks he has thrown six touchdowns versus two interceptions.

Week 12 has the Falcons at home with a favorable opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, who might be playing without Adrian Peterson. Week 13 should be a high-scoring game with the Houston Texans. So the next two weeks look good for Ryan.

Rookie wide receiver Julio Jones might miss another game this week with his hamstring injury. However Ryan has Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez to keep generating the passing yardage.

Philip Rivers: Not

4 of 6

Philip Rivers and the San Diego Charges are on a bad slide. They have lost five games in a row.

Rivers leads the league in interceptions with 17. During the last four games he has thrown eight touchdowns versus eight interceptions.

In a 12-team league, Rivers most likely started the season as a starting quarterback. Unless there is a remarkable and sudden turnaround, you can't go into the fantasy playoffs with him in your starting lineup.

Carson Palmer: Hot

5 of 6

The Oakland Raiders have won two games in a row. In the same two games, Carson Palmer's quarterback rating has been over 100.

Palmer has thrown six touchdowns versus four interceptions in the last three games. In two of the last three games he had 299 and 332 passing yards. This week the Raiders play the Chicago Bears, who will be without Jay Cutler. This looks like a good week to start Palmer.

However, since the Raiders will play the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions in Weeks 14 and 15, I don't think you could count on Palmer for the fantasy playoffs.

Josh Freeman: Not

6 of 6

The Tampa Bay Bucs have lost four games in a row. Part of the reason is that Josh Freeman has thrown nine interceptions in those four games versus six touchdowns. It is difficult for a team to win with more interceptions than touchdown passes.

Upcoming games with Carolina and Jacksonville might give Freeman the chance to turn things around. But for this week against Tennessee, he can't be in your starting lineup.
