What Kyle Orton's Release from Denver Broncos Means for Tim Tebow

Chris TrapassoNov 22, 2011

Who said the Denver Broncos front office, most namely John Elway, doesn't have faith in Tim Tebow as their quarterback?

Well, they aren't totally sold on the most polarizing football player as their franchise guy for the future, but today they cut former starting signal-caller Kyle Orton.

Huh?

Yes, after dangling Orton as trade bait before the season began, then benching him after an atrocious start to the season, the Broncos are done with him.

Though the timing of the move and the move itself is surprising, it doesn't mean much for Tebow for the remainder of the season.

It would have taken a total disaster for Denver to bench him and if they needed a new option at quarterback it's likely that we would have seen Brady Quinn.

When the coaching staff decided to go with Tebow this season, they were essentially ending Orton's time in a Broncos uniform.

Did you ever think Orton would replace Tebow in 2011?

I didn't.

Looking ahead to next season and beyond, this move shows a little more faith in Tebow from the front office.

If nothing else, there is less competition for Tebow at the quarterback position and they've already shown that No. 15 gets the nod over Brady Quinn, despite Quinn being a far more gifted and experienced passer.

Does this add pressure to Tebow?

Not really.

He's been dealing with hype surrounding him since he was in high school. All he's wanted to be is a starting quarterback.

If I'm Tebow, I'm grateful that I was given the chance to make plays as Bronco.

He knew when he was named the starter, there wasn't much of a chance Orton was going to supplant him, so the cutting of Orton isn't as significant as it may initially seem, especially for Mr. Tebow.
