Kansas City Chiefs Report Card Week 11: Grading Each Unit

Farzin VousoughianNov 22, 2011

Words cannot describe just how bad the Kansas City Chiefs are this season. Every week feels like a rerun of a television show, but it gets worse every week.

The Patriots dominated the Chiefs in all three phases of the game on Monday Night Football.

How would you grade the Chiefs' performance? Let me know if you agree or disagree.

Offense

1 of 5

In the first quarter, the Chiefs offense was moving the ball well on the ground and through the air.

Tyler Palko had no problems early in the game. He took care of the ball and did not allow the Patriots to make a play defensively.

But Palko and the Kansas City offense fell apart after the first quarter.

Palko threw three interceptions and was sacked three times.

Thomas Jones came away with the longest run of the season for 26 yards, placing the ball at the five-yard line. However, the Chiefs were unable to get into the end zone and did not return to the red zone again on Monday night.

Dexter McCluster made a couple of plays while Jackie Battle was a non-factor for the Chiefs.

Overall grade: F

Defense

2 of 5

If the Chiefs were going to win this game, they needed a huge game from the defense.

The Chiefs defense sacked Tom Brady three times in the first quarter. Tamba Hali got his first sack since Halloween, which was also on Monday night. Amon Gordon earned his first career sack while Wallace Gilberry stripped the football out of Brady's hands to create the game's first turnover.

Following the first quarter, the Chiefs would not sack Brady again and Brady found a rhythm to get his offense going.

The Chiefs defense fell apart. Missed tackles, blown coverage, lack of a pass rush, you name it. The Chiefs had no answer for the Patriots.

Rob Gronkowski caught two touchdown passes. He earned them with big catch-and-run plays. Gronkowski was fearless and refused to be brought down by the Chiefs defense.

Chiefs fans are screaming for a quarterback in the first round of the draft. But a defensive player might be a bigger need at this point.

Overall grade: D+

Special Teams

3 of 5

For the second time in three weeks, the only set of points accumulated by the Chiefs was from Ryan Succop.

Succop gave the Chiefs a 26-yard field goal for the game's first score of the night.

But like the offense and defense, the special teams unit struggled.

Succop was unable to get the football to travel 10 yards on a surprise onside kick in the first quarter. The Chiefs were flagged for illegal touching, even though they thought it should have been their football.

Julian Edelman lit up the Chiefs in the third quarter with a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown and gave the Patriots all of the momentum in the game. From that point on, it was clear that the Patriots would move on to win.

Coaching

4 of 5

It is hard to be Todd Haley right now. Nothing is going his way. He is having to coach a team that has only put up 16 points in the past three games.

Haley made a gutsy call to go for an onsides kick early, which shouldn't be a surprise to many Chiefs fans. Haley once went for an onsides kick to open the game against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 of the 2010 season.

Haley also had an intriguing postgame press press conference as he spoke to the media and used the word "terrific" a couple of times to describe Palko. It may be Palko's first career start, but Palko threw three interceptions and was brought down three times, playing far from terrific. Although not all of the interceptions were completely on him, he did make a bad pass into triple coverage on his third interception.

In the end, the Chiefs not only lost, they lost big.

It seems that Haley cannot coach this team to victory. The question now becomes, will he return as the head coach next season?

Overall grade: D

Die Hard Fans Sitting at Home

Thankfully, this game was not at Arrowhead Stadium.

For those Chiefs fans who stayed up late and watched the game from start to finish, you deserve something. How about an A+?
