Phoenix Suns: Former All-Star Ceballos Suffers Minor Heart Attacks

Gabe ZaldivarNov 21, 2011

Cedric Ceballos was hospitalized for suffering a series of minor heart attacks on Sunday. The news put a pall on all our days, especially those that remember Ceballos as an affable giant who defied gravity.

Anytime you see a former athlete's name on the crawl, you know it's not going to be good. Ceballos' tale is one of a former star and a health scare that was hopefully caught early.

The Arizona Republic reports by way of a tweet from Paul Coro that the former Phoenix Suns player was hospitalized for a series of heart attacks.

Ceballos then released a statement asking for thought and prayers as he continues to get better following the frightening episode.

"

I feel blessed and very fortunate to be here today and to have made the decision to go to the hospital and get my symptoms checked out late last night. I ask everyone to keep me in your prayers as I make my journey back to good health. Thank you everyone who has called and is concerned. While I want to respond and speak to everyone, I cannot right now, but will be in touch very soon. God bless you.

"

Ceballos was a class act that I recall fondly for what he was as a Los Angeles Lakers player and despairingly when he played for the rival Suns.

I do have to admit that even when he suited up for the purple and orange in the early 1990s, I still managed to smile or marvel at his ability to score. I always wondered how he would fare as a Laker, and then that wish was granted.

He joined a Lakers squad that featured Nick the Quick and Eddie Jones in a mini-Showtime. Sure they didn't win anything, but they sure were fun to watch.

I remember Ceballos fondly as a player and sincerely hope for his quick and speedy recovery.
