Fantasy Football Week 16 Rankings: Defenses

Michael WhooleyDec 19, 2008

With just two weeks left in the season, and likely only one left in your fantasy season, we are presented with some very interesting defensive matchups for Week 16, including games that feature top defenses against each other like Pittsburgh-Tennessee, Baltimore-Dallas and the New York Giants against Carolina.

Technically the defenses don’t play against each other, but it’s always fun to watch games like this where points and yardage are at a premium for the offenses.

To find out where the six teams listed above, as well as the other 26 teams, lie then check out the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 16 Team Defense Rankings.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Tennessee

As the season comes to a close it’s no surprise that the Pittsburgh Steelers defense is playing at an elite level. In the last four games, all wins for the team, the Steelers have given up an average of just 10.5 points a game.

Three of those games came against teams with competent or better offenses such as New England, Baltimore and Dallas.

2. Dallas Cowboys vs. Baltimore

The Dallas Cowboys defense has really stepped it up recently as it has allowed an average of just 12.3 points per game in the last three contests. The Cowboys are coming off a dominating performance last week where they held the Giants to eight points, 218 total yards and forced two interceptions from Eli Manning.

3. Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington

In Week Five, the Washington Redskins dismantled the vaunted Philadelphia Eagles defense in scoring 23 points. The Eagles managed just six fantasy points in the loss. This week will be a different story.

The Redskins have fallen apart in the second half of the season and have scored just a combined 30 points in their last three games. Meanwhile the Eagles have stepped it up as they’ve caused six turnovers in their last three games.

4. New York Jets @ Seattle

After a few poor games following the upset of the Tennessee Titans in week 12, the New York Jets defense has come back alive. Last week against the Buffalo Bills, the Jets forced four turnovers and registered double-digit fantasy points.

This week, they get an even weaker offensive team in the Seattle Seahawks so expect another strong performance from the Jets.

5. Houston Texans @ Oakland

Left for dead just weeks ago, the Houston Texans have resurrected themselves and while the offense has been huge in that, the defense has been instrumental. The Texans allowed just 12 points to the Titans last week.

Houston has caused 11 turnovers in its last four games, and this week, they’ll face an Oakland offense that will be without its top two receivers in Ashley Lelie and Ronald Curry.

6. Tennessee Titans vs. Pittsburgh

The best thing about the Tennessee Titans defense is how consistent it is. With the exception of the atrocious performance against the Jets, the Tennessee defense has scored seven or more fantasy points in every game this season.

The Pittsburgh offense has weapons but is fairly conservative so expect another solid performance from the Titans in this game.

7. Baltimore Ravens @ Dallas

As if you need enough proof that the Baltimore Ravens defense was one of the best in the league, consider that it’s registered double-digit fantasy points in each of the last four weeks.

The only reason it isn’t higher this week is because the Dallas offense, despite the locker-room issues, has been playing very well recently. Still, the Ravens are a good start this week.
