WWE Survivor Series Results: Giving WWE Championship to CM Punk Was No-Brainer

Tim DanielsNov 21, 2011

CM Punk defeated Alberto Del Rio to win the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. After an uninspiring title reign by Del Rio that lacked crowd involvement and significant storyline advancement, the WWE had no choice.

Punk is the company's fastest rising star and they couldn't keep him strapless any longer if his momentum from a red-hot summer was going to continue.

If Punk is truly the best in the world like he claims to be, the next couple of months are huge. He must prove that he can carry the company on his back until the next big pay-per-view, Royal Rumble.

Judging by the enormous crowd reaction after his victory, he's off to a great start. But now comes the tough part—getting viewers to tune in on a weekly basis just to see what pipe bomb he's going to drop at any given moment.

The Rock, who returned to action last night, was able to become the most electrifying man in all of entertainment because of his extraordinary promo skills. Punk will need to reach that same level if he hopes to emulate Rocky's staying power.

One advantage Punk does have which will give him some extra leeway is his in-ring ability. His win over John Cena at Money in the Bank and Sunday night against Del Rio were both well-executed bouts that kept the crowd on the edge of their seat.

So, even if his promo intensity doesn't live up to that June blockbuster, not all hope is lost.

It's never easy to live up to sky-high expectations, so Punk has his work cut out for him. But he's been angling toward this opportunity for months, and now it's arrived. He must step up to the plate and knock it out of the park.

For CM Punk and his legion of followers, it's officially clobbering time.
