BCS Rankings: SEC Should Be First Conference Ever to Have 3 Teams in BCS Bowls

Nicholas GossNov 20, 2011

The SEC has to become the first conference ever to have three teams play in BCS bowls or something is seriously wrong with college football.

No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Arkansas are all more than deserving of playing for the BCS title game and certainly a regular BCS bowl.

These are clearly the three best teams in the country. There is no question about it.

The last time three teams from the same conference occupied the top three places in the AP Poll in its 75-year history was the final poll of the 1971 season when Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado were 1-2-3 respectively from the Big Eight conference.

Not only are these teams in the same conference, they are in the same division—the SEC West.

Out of the three top teams, LSU and Alabama are the better teams. They deserve to play in the BCS championship game.

Arkansas deserves to play in a BCS bowl too, likely the Sugar or the Orange Bowl.

Where these SEC teams separate themselves from the rest of the country is on the defensive side of the ball.

Alabama and LSU are ranked No. 1 and 2 in points allowed per game, and Arkansas has a solid 20.1 points allowed per game average.

These defenses have so many talented athletes who have the speed and strength to dominate any team in the country. This is why the last five BCS champions were SEC teams.

When you go through an SEC conference schedule where almost every week there's a very tough game against a quality opponent, and you have just two, one or zero losses, then you fully deserve to be in a BCS bowl.

Whoever wins the SEC championship game will automatically get into a BCS bowl and the other two should receive at-large bids.

No other conference has multiple teams deserving of a BCS bowl berth that would prevent LSU, Alabama and Arkansas from not all making a BCS bowl game.

Oklahoma State and Oklahoma both don't deserve to get in from the Big 12, Clemson and Virginia Tech don't both deserve to get in from the ACC and neither do Oregon or Stanford from the Pac-12.

The SEC is the best conference in the country by far, and its dominance this season should be rewarded with three BCS bowl berths.

If LSU, Alabama and Arkansas do not all make BCS bowls, then the current system will prove that it is severely flawed and unable to determine who the best teams in the country are.
