UFC 139 Results: Can Dan Henderson Become MMA's First Triple Crown Winner ?
Dan Henderson is one of the most accomplished fighters of all time, but the "triple crown" will elude him; he won't be the first man to capture three different titles.
For those who don't know, Henderson was the first man in MMA to simultaneously have titles in two separate weight classes. He accomplished this feat in Pride, winning titles in the middleweight (205 lbs. in Pride) and welterweight (183 lbs. in Pride) divisions.
He lost both of those titles in unification bouts in the UFC against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Anderson Silva.
Henderson is now 7-1 since that time, and he most recently beat fellow Pride all-star Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in an epic showdown.
The victory (as well as his more recent impressive knockouts) has given rise to talk of Henderson challenging the winner of the UFC light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Lyoto Machida.
Could Henderson defeat the winner of this fight and become modern MMA's first triple crown winner (I say modern because Dan Severn actually won two UFC tournament championships as well as the Superfight championship back in the SEG days, so technically he was a triple crown winner)?
If Machida beats Jones, then it's definitely a possibility. Machida's wrestling, while proficient, is the weakest part of his game, and Henderson could exploit that.
Henderson would also be able to capitalize on Machida's habit of keeping his hands down and chin straight up in the air by nailing the Karate stylist with his patented "H-bomb" right hand.
A victory against Jones is less likely since the current champion has made so many great competitors look like amateurs, regardless of any advantage they seemed to have going into the fight.
However, Jones has never really been hit flush by a power-puncher. It's totally possible that Jones' chin can't handle the "H-bomb."
Still, don't bet the house on Henderson getting the light heavyweight belt. He may be one of the greatest fighters ever, but his time is nearing an end.
