UFC 139 Results: Wanderlei Silva Believes He Did Le a Favor by Breaking His Nose

Nick CaronNov 20, 2011

The Axe Murderer was alive and well last night as the former Pride middleweight champion won an epic battle with Cung Le in the semi-main event of UFC 139.

The win was especially important for Silva, who had been rumored to be nearing retirement. UFC president Dana White had even mentioned that he thought Silva should consider hanging it up before he suffers many knockout losses in a row like Chuck Liddell did.

But Silva defied his naysayers with a knockout victory of his own over Cung Le.

“I feel wonderful, this was a great fight for me,” Silva told MMA Heat’s Karyn Bryant after his victory. “He’s a really good fighter, he’s a tough, tough guy.”

Silva and Le battled back and forth with numerous near knockouts, but trademark Wanderlei Silva came out late in the fight when he began smashing the former two-time All-American wrestler with violent knees to the face.

“Right now, with that nose, he’s going to make more money in Hollywood. Because now he looks like a real fighter,” Silva laughed.

When asked how he was going to celebrate the victory, Silva smiled and confidently answered,

"

I’m going to go to my bed and sleep, pray a lot, say thank to the lord because he’s great. He gives me great support. Thanks so much to all my fans. You are the reason I’m here and it’s a great honor to have you with me. Thank you so much!

"

Despite fighting against their home-town favorite, Wanderlei Silva won the admiration of the San Jose fans who went absolutely crazy when he got the victory by knockout.

It will be interesting to see where the legendary former champion goes from here.
