WWE Survivor Series 2011: Smart Move Is for C.M. Punk to Lose

The WWE has a number of decisions to make tonight.

For example, what should they do with their biggest titles, the World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Title? Should they put the belt on Big Show or keep it on Mark Henry? Should they keep the belt on Alberto Del Rio, or move it to CM Punk?  

Well, the popular move would be to put the belt on CM Punk. He’s one of the most popular wrestlers that the WWE has going on right now. Punk even got WWE ice cream bars to be something that may come back in the near future.  

However, the popular move and the smart move are not the same things.  

Yes it will make a lot of you angry to see Punk lose to Alberto Del Rio tonight at Survivor Series. I can understand that, as Del Rio has done nothing to really make himself a good champion. 

Yet the WWE has to keep the belt on Del Rio while keeping Punk as the challenger. It’s the right move because where would Punk go if he would win tonight? There isn’t a real good angle for Punk right now.  

Would another match against Del Rio really be worth anything? What we have seen in their build to tonight’s WWE Title match is Punk carrying the feud in every aspect. So why would the WWE put us through another stretch of promos and in-ring work.  

They need Punk as the person who is fighting the establishment while being kept down by management. As the WWE Champion, he’s not really fighting the establishment. Instead, outside of the storyline he’s looked upon as management's go-to guy.  

Is CM Punk one of the most “over” wrestlers in the WWE? Of course he is.

However, Punk is at his best when he is chasing the title, not when he has the title. 

The WWE will be smart to keep Punk from winning the belt. It will not hurt his popularity or his ability to connect with the crowd. Instead, it may make him even more of a hero, depending on how the match ends.
