College Football Predictions Week 13: Who's Primed to Move Up BCS Rankings?

Tom PerryNov 20, 2011

With so many upsets this past weekend and the SEC's stranglehold on the top spots in the BCS rankings, is there really anything left to play for this season?

If the past two weeks tell us anything, there's still plenty to play for as the regular season comes to a close.

Maybe it's positioning for a BCS bowl or coaches using that final ranking for recruiting reasons.

There may not be any real meaningful movement in Week 13, but there are some teams that should make a move.

One thing is clear: As long as LSU and Alabama keep winning, we're going to have an All-SEC BCS championship game.

Georgia Bulldogs

1 of 7

No. 13 Georgia is set to play in the SEC championship game.

But before Mark Richt's team faces off with the best from the SEC West, the Bulldogs will face rival Georgia Tech. The No. 23 Yellow Jackets are 8-3, and a victory by Georgia will help elevate the Bulldogs even more.

Not bad for a team that opened the season 0-2.

Now imagine how far the Bulldogs will move up if they beat LSU, Alabama or Arkansas in the title game.

Michigan Wolverines

2 of 7

Maybe No. 15 Michigan won't benefit greatly in the BCS with a win over Ohio State, but it certainly will help the Wolverines' psyche.

A 10-win season and a victory over the hated Buckeyes would be a major improvement over the three-year Rich Rodriguez era.

Could the Wolverines play their way into a BCS bowl? Most likely not, but if everything broke right, it could happen.

Getting a win over Ohio State would be another step in the right direction for getting that BCS berth.

Wisconsin Badgers

3 of 7

After No. 16 Wisconsin's start, it looked like the Badgers were going to be a lock for the inaugural Big Ten championship game.

Now, the Badgers must beat Penn State this week to earn a date against Michigan State.

Since No. 19 Penn State's offense struggled to score, Wisconsin should be fine at home and earn that coveted spot.

Moving up the BCS rankings may not help Wisconsin much, though.

The Badgers would have to beat Michigan State to earn a BCS bowl berth. If Wisconsin loses in the title game, it's unlikely the Badgers would get a BCS game with three losses.

South Carolina Gamecocks

4 of 7

No. 12 South Carolina won't get a second shot at winning the SEC championship, but a 10-win season and another win over rival Clemson would still equal a successful year.

The Gamecocks have won their last two meetings with the Tigers, and No. 17 Clemson has not looked as tough since losing to Georgia Tech.

South Carolina can use a win over Clemson to help with recruiting, and it is sure to give Steve Spurrier some opportunities at one-liners.

Houston Cougars

5 of 7

Houston is this year's Boise State. Or maybe the Cougars are TCU.

No matter what, No. 8 Houston won't get a shot at the BCS championship. A win over an 8-3 Tulsa program will still help the Cougars a bit, though.

It might actually be fun to watch Case Keenum and co. get a shot at LSU's defense.

Stanford Cardinal

6 of 7

One bad outing is all that stands between Stanford and a date in the BCS championship.

The Cardinal's loss to Oregon will likely cost them a shot at the Pac-12 title game as well.

But closing out the regular season with a victory over Notre Dame would mean another 11-win season for the Cardinal.

It's not clear if No. 6 Stanford could earn a BCS spot, but there's a good chance many bowls would love to have Andrew Luck on the field.

Better enjoy this, Stanford fans, because Luck is gone this time.

Virginia Tech Hokies

7 of 7

Much like Stanford, No. 5 Virginia Tech would be in position to play in the championship game if not for a slip-up against Clemson.

This week's game with rival Virginia is no gimme.

But the Hokies will be favored in the game, and an 11-1 season will boost Frank Beamer's team in the rankings. Of course, they may need to wait an additional week for No. 4 Oklahoma State to lose to Oklahoma.

If Virginia Tech beats Clemson in a rematch in the ACC championship game, then the Hokies can make their claim for the BCS championship.

Of course, no one will really listen.
