WWE Survivor Series 2011: The Rock Will Resurrect John Cena's Fading Career

Adam WellsNov 20, 2011

John Cena’s stay at the top of the WWE mountain has been tenuous to say the least. He always draws the biggest crowd reaction, but more often than not it is a reaction littered with as many boos as cheers. The good news is that he will have The Rock in his corner at the Survivor Series.

Cena teaming with The Rock is not the good news, though it does make for an interesting dynamic. The real story will be the end of their match on Sunday night with The Miz and R-Truth, specifically whether Cena turns on Rock.

The way that the storyline has been presented on television, Cena has to be the one to screw Rock. Remember, this is Rock’s first match in seven years and it is taking place in Madison Square Garden, the arena where he first made his name back in 1996.

Cena is being made to look like the villain in this whole feud, even though you have to be willing to see it to believe it. When Mick Foley came out on Raw last week to shill for Cena as a great worker who deserves the respect of the fans, the writing was on the wall.

But a Cena turn on Rock has to feel calculated; it can’t be something that WWE just does for the sake of doing. He needs something to make him feel important again because he keeps coming off like a dork on television, and this match is the perfect time to do it.

Cena can be a cool character that the fans get behind. It happened back in 2004 when he was the rapper spitting rhymes about anyone and everyone that stood in his way.

Now, with Rock getting set to return on a more consistent basis in January, Cena has the best opponent to make him feel relevant as a main event worker again.

Cena needs to turn on Rock at Survivor Series to save his character and make himself cool again in the eyes of the people that have been waiting to see more attitude out of him for years.

The writing is on the wall for a Cena turn on The Rock, but the only question is if WWE has the guts to go through with it. I believe it will happen, and I believe that the fans will actually love the dark side of Cena that we see after it happens.
