Presidents Cup 2011: Is Win at Royal Melbourne Enough to Kick-Start Tiger Woods?

Wes ODonnellNov 20, 2011

Tiger Woods didn't get off to a good start Down Under, but he certainly closed well.

The world's former No. 1 golfer clinched a 19-15 victory for the American team in the 2011 Presidents Cup just a few days after suffering one of the worst defeats of his career.

No golfer needed a win more than Woods.

It has been far too long since he last won anything on the golf course.

His game isn't back to what it was prior to his epic fall from grace, but he's making strides.

Woods closed the Presidents Cup with an easy win over Aaron Baddeley. He was never particularly challenged on the day and won 4 and 3.

Steve Stricker still had to take to the tee after Woods, but the much maligned golfer couldn't help but smile and celebrate after his win.

American captain Freddie Couples had this to say about his controversial pick's win:

"He was ready for a month," Couples told ESPN. "Certainly, I couldn't answer how he was going to play, but this week I think he showed to himself that his swing is back and he's healthy, and that's more important to me. Obviously, we want to win the cup, but's more important for me to have people realize that he can play the game."

And play the game he can.

The question now is whether or not he can build off this success and get back to doing what he does on the golf course: winning.

Despite being supremely talented and experienced, Woods isn't above the cut when it comes to confidence issues on the course.

More often than not he is his own worst enemy.

Being able to get a win in any form is a huge step forward for him.

It only takes one tournament to turn things around, and Woods, who is capable of magic on the course, could be on his way back to relevancy.
