NASCAR and Mauricia Grant Settle Discrimination Lawsuit

al asifyouknowDec 19, 2008

The lawsuit filled by Mauricia Grant against NASCAR this summer was apparently settled on Dec. 3 in New York. As always in these suits, the terms were not made public.

Ok! Well! That was that, after all that posturing by both sides "about standing on principle," it all comes down to this quote. Honestly, I just love this quote.

"NEITHER GRANT NOR NASCAR ADMITTED LIABILITY OR WRONGDOING IN THE  SETTLEMENT."

I hope there are some legal experts here to explain this to some of us, my questions are:

      1) Does this mean that nothing happened. That no one called Ms. Grant racially insensitive names, stood naked in front of her, or was there really a "Mo time"?

       2) Does this mean that NASCAR—even though it has a zero tolerance policy in place on race and gender discrimination and says the incidents were never reported to them—just wanted to contribute to Ms. Grants' future, just because they are trying to be nice.

        3) What happened to the 23 instances of sexual harassment and the 36 instances of alleged gender and racial bias? Well, I guess they just were washed away in a sea of dollars.

I know I'm being a bit insensitive to both parties, but I do remember the outrage by both sides. I remember all the interviews. If you followed this story, you know what I'm talking about; this is one of those things that make you go "huuu."

I'm glad everyone got what they wanted. If I were Ms. Grant I would of taken the money, but with an apology from NASCAR. If I were NASCAR and I was sure nothing happened, I would of given "nothing."

Sometimes life is about principle, sometimes is just about convenience and money. Live and learn.
