BCS Rankings Week 13: Winners That Must Not Move Up Polls
Generally speaking, a win is a win. But in college football, style points count. None of these teams managed to do much in terms of style points on Saturday.
They all won and given that teams ahead of them did lose, they certainly shouldn't drop. But none of these teams put forth an effort worthy of moving up in the BCS, especially this late in the season.
Georgia
What in the world happened here? Kentucky is just a good enough team to be playing Georgia this close, especially in Georgia.
The Bulldogs were losing this game in the second quarter, up by only two at halftime, and won by a rather paltry nine points when all was said and done.
Georgia should have beaten the Wildcats by three touchdowns, if not more. More important than what it means for the rankings, this performance doesn't suggest that the Bulldogs will do well against whatever team wins the SEC West in the conference title game, or even Georgia Tech next week.
South Carolina
Georgia at least has a little bit of an excuse. While Kentucky is not a team that should have given Georgia any trouble, the Wildcats are at least a conference opponent and rival.
The Citadel, on the other hand, is not a conference rival for the Gamecocks and frankly not even that good of a team at their own level.
So, while a 41-20 win doesn't look all that close, you need to know that the Citadel didn't really close the gap late. As a matter of fact, the last touchdown was scored by South Carolina.
Right now, the Gamecocks are just hanging on. They are doing a good job of it. But to move up would probably make them a Top 10 team, which would be vastly overrated.
Wisconsin
The Fighting Illini started its season well, but the heart of the Big Ten schedule has not been kind to them. Wisconsin is a team that's literally two plays away from being undefeated and in great shape for the National Championship Game.
So even in Champaign, this is not a game where the Badgers should have needed a 17-0 second half to win. But that's exactly what happened to Wisconsin.
They'll have a showdown with Penn State next week. The winner of that game will make the Big Ten Championship Game. Still, after today's performance, it's hard to say that they are really a Top 15 team, which is where they'll likely be if they move up.
