UFC 139 Results: Michael McDonald Shows Serious Talent with Win over Alex Soto

Josh MartinNov 19, 2011

On a night replete with intriguing bantamweight bouts at UFC 139, Michael McDonald gave UFC president Dana White plenty to ponder as far as the future of one of mixed martial arts' most exciting weight classes is concerned. "Mayday" made quick work of Alex Soto, earning a vicious knockout of "Extremo" just 56 seconds into the fight.

Soto, an Afghanistan veteran and former dolphin trainer at Sea World, came out as the aggressor in his UFC debut, charging at McDonald in fits and spurts but struggling to land anything of consequence. One final mistimed shot left Soto vulnerable to a counter—an opportunity upon which McDonald quickly seized with a massive right hand to send Soto to the mat. McDonald wasted not a moment before pouncing on a woozy Soto, who somehow was able to get back on his feet.

But not for long, as McDonald continued to assault his clean-clock competitor big hits. McDonald forced Soto against the cage and landed two devastating uppercuts before referee Josh Rosenthal rushed in to end the fight.

With that, Michael McDonald, not to be confused with the one-time lead singer of the Doobie Brothers, asserted himself as a rising force to be reckoned with in the bantamweight division. McDonald's 14-1 record and impressive talent belies the fact that he is currently the youngest fighter in the UFC, still nearly two months away from his 21st birthday.

Joe Rogan yucked it up with McDonald after the fight about nearly being of legal drinking age, but rest assured, this kid is no joke and he'll have plenty to drink to over what is sure to be a long and successful MMA career.

As for Alex Soto, he certainly can't be pleased with Saturday's result, but should have another opportunity or two to prove his worth in the UFC. When that time comes, he'd better come with a more disciplined approach than the one he came with at UFC 139. Otherwise, he'll be destined for another quick knockout on a counter-punch from whoever he meets next in the Octagon.
