UFC 139 Results: Danny Castillo Poised for High-Profile Match After Dominant Win

Mike ChiariNov 19, 2011

Entering his lightweight match against Shamar Bailey at UFC 139 on Saturday night, Danny Castillo was looking to bounce back from a tough decision loss to Jacob Volkmann in August. Castillo did just that as he pounded Bailey into the mat.

Castillo picked up a first-round knockout as he neutralized Bailey with some vicious punches. Castillo was dominant from start to finish as he used his strength to slam Bailey twice and had little trouble keeping Bailey on the mat which worked to his advantage.

Bailey was certainly no tomato can as he entered the fight with a 12-4 career record and performed well on The Ultimate Fighter. Castillo proved to be the better man and the far better fighter, even though Bailey was fined for failing to make weight prior to the contest.

Bailey's weight advantage most definitely was not apparent in the fight, however, as Castillo overpowered him and did not allow him to get any offense in. The win improved Castillo's career mixed martial arts mark to 12-4 and made him 2-1 in UFC since making the jump from WEC.

While the fight was merely the opener, I think Castillo's effort earned him a far better spot on the next card he is involved in. At 32 years of age I wouldn't say that Castillo is going to develop into an elite lightweight, but he seems like he is capable of rising up the ranks a bit.

A win over Bailey should carry some weight, and I think it will net him a more high-profile fight in his next bout. It remains to be seen just how much Castillo can do in UFC, but if he continues to carry out his game plan as well as he did against Bailey, he could really surprise some people.
