UFC 139 Results: Shamar Bailey a Major Disappointment in Loss to Danny Castillo

Tim DanielsNov 19, 2011

Shamar Bailey is watching his UFC career crumble beneath his feet after losing in the first round against Danny Castillo at UFC 139. It's a disappointing turn of events for Bailey, who started his MMA career 11-1.

Castillo took control early in the bout by getting Bailey on the mat and just kept wearing him down until Bailey couldn't withstand any more shots. The TKO came at 4:52 of the first round, just seconds before the bell would have rung.

It was Bailey's fourth loss in his last five fights dating back to early 2010. And it comes after his career was seemingly on the ascent after beating John Kolosci by unanimous decision.

Instead, it turns out his record was inflated by sub par opponents and once Bailey took the next step, he was exposed. Perhaps never more than against “Last Call,” though. He was never in a position of strength the entire round.

Bailey now has to take a long look at himself in the mirror and decide if he can cut it at this level.

It's clearly whatever training regimen he's been using hasn’t been effective since he came into this fight overweight and his purses will continue to suffer if the losing streak continues.

He's shown glimpses of talent in the past, but they've become few and far between in recent months and that's just not going to cut it. Especially as UFC continues to grow and the level of competition improves.

Maybe he should lower his level of competition again to help build his confidence back up before attempting to work his way back up the welterweight or lightweight ladder.

Whatever he decides, Bailey can't continue to accept the status quo. If he does, he'll find himself looking for a new line of work before much longer.
