Urban Meyer Would Be a Perfect Fit for Ohio State
Ohio State is the hiring of Urban Meyer away from returning to glory. Meyer would have the Buckeye's collapsing program turned around in a couple of seasons—NCAA sanctions or not.
There are strong indications that this hire is becoming a strong possibility.
The Facts
It was reported earlier that he had agreed to take the job.
Meyer denied these reports in the broadcast booth on Saturday saying, "I've not been offered any job, and I've certainly not accepted any job."
While that was a denial to some degree, he stopped short of saying that he has not been in contact with Ohio State about the job. And to that end, ESPN has reported that they have learned from sources close to Meyer and Ohio State that the two sides are talking.
If Meyer does take this job it will be a win-win for both sides. Ohio State has fallen this year in the wake of a scandal that resulted in the departure of head coach Jim Tressel, self-imposed sanctions and an NCAA investigation.
Outlook
Ohio State still carries the big name notoriety that lends itself to the elite recruiting skills of Meyer.
Meyer has won everywhere he has been. His career at Florida, Utah and Bowling Green has led him to a 104-23 record in 10 years.
Meyer knows the kinds of athletes it takes to succeed in his spread option offense. He would quickly bring in talent that is adept at running his high powered attack, and the positive results would be seen immediately.
This would also give Meyer an opportunity to restore a program to which he has roots. He is an Ohio native, and began his career as a graduate assistant on the Ohio State staff.
In light of these developments, the rest of the Big Ten would be wise to send Meyer letters commending his choice to spend more time with his family in hopes he continues to stay retired.
