2012 NFL Draft: 5 Players Not Named Andrew Luck Who Could Go No. 1
Make no mistake, the odds of Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck being the first player selected in the 2012 NFL Draft are overwhelming at this point, and jaws everywhere will drop if his isn't the first name spoken by commissioner Roger Goodell when he steps to the podium.
However, strange things can always happen, including Luck deciding that he wants to stay at Stanford for one more season, so here's a look at a handful of players that could be taken first overall should it turn out the NFL is out of "Luck" in April.
1. Matt Kalil: OT, University of Southern California
1 of 5There may be no more difficult position to fill in the National Football League than left tackle, but the 6'7", 295-pound mauler from USC has all the tools to be a star at the next level and would be highly coveted by any number of NFL teams.
2. Matt Barkley: QB, University of Southern California
2 of 5The second straight Trojan on this list, quarterback Matt Barkley may not possess eye-popping size or arm strength, but he's a smart player that seems well-suited for the pro game and has a had a very solid season at USC, throwing for nearly 2,800 yards and 29 touchdowns with only six interceptions.
3. Landry Jones: QB, University of Oklahoma
3 of 5Quarterbacks are always going to carry a premium in the NFL draft, so should we end up in a Luck-less draft, it's very possible that the team with the first overall pick (most likely the Colts) will take a long look at Oklahoma signal-caller Landry Jones, who has been putting up video-game numbers the past three seasons under center in Norman.
4. Justin Blackmon: WR, Oklahoma State University
4 of 5This selection is a bit of a dark-horse candidate, and it would be quite a shock to see a wide receiver selected first overall in the NFL draft, but there's little question that the top prospect at that position this year is Justin Blackmon, who possesses a tantalizing combination of size, speed and soft hands.
5. Robert Griffin: QB, Baylor University
5 of 5The early portion of the NFL draft is usually quarterback-heavy. Given how many NFL squads desperately need an upgrade at the position, several will certainly be taking a look at Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin, who's as athletic a signal-caller as there is in the country, but may not be as "polished" as the other quarterbacks on this list.
