Chelsea vs. Liverpool: All the Pressure Is on Chelsea to Win at Stamford Bridge

Nicholas GossNov 20, 2011

When Chelsea and Liverpool meet on Sunday in an epic clash of Premier League powers, all the pressure will be on the Blues to win at Stamford Bridge and take all three points.

Under former coach Jose Mourinho and even many of his successors, Chelsea has made their home their fortress.

Chelsea are a good team at Stamford Bridge, but a loss on Sunday to rival Liverpool would severely damage their hopes of winning their first league title in two years.

Manchester City are currently 12 points ahead of Chelsea atop the Premier League table, and a Liverpool win on Sunday would really put the Blues not only in a tough spot to win the title, but create finishing in the top four a real challenge.

Newcastle has played very well this season and are currently third place in the table, three points ahead Chelsea.

Chelsea travels to Newcastle just two league games after their clash with Liverpool this weekend, and a loss to the Reds would make the Blues' December 3 match with Newcastle a certain must-win.

But the main reason Chelsea is under pressure to win is because they are the more talented team. They have a better defense than Liverpool, and better attack-minded players.

A loss to Liverpool would give Chelsea three straight losses to the "Big Four" of the Premier League. The Blues were defeated by Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the season and were beaten by Arsenal 5-3 in their last league game.

At home in a position where all three points must be taken, Chelsea is certainly under all the pressure on Sunday.

Liverpool's roster is still coming together, and they have not played in too many big games as a squad. If Chelsea loses on Sunday, there will be real questions to answer going forward.

With the pressure at its highest, Chelsea leaders such as Frank Lampard and John Terry must set the example at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
