Week 11 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Matthew Stafford and QBs You'd Be Foolish to Start

Nicholas GossNov 18, 2011

Matthew Stafford is injured again and thus the fate of the Detroit Lions and your fantasy football team could rely on the health of the quarterback's right index finger.

Stafford is one of several quarterbacks you must bench in Week 11 of the NFL season, whether injuries are a problem or they have a bad matchup.

Let's look at three quarterbacks you would be foolish to start on your fantasy team this week.

1. Tony Romo

The Washington Redskins have the ninth-best pass defense in football, and with the emergence of breakout running back DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will not perform well on Sunday.

Murray will be the focal point of the offense, and his effective running will ease the offensive burden on Romo.

In his last four games against the Redskins, Romo has just four total touchdown passes, and it is unlikely he will break out of that slump this week.

Romo hasn't played well on the road this season and is not worth starting in Week 11.

2. Andy Dalton

Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will have a difficult time playing well against a talented and veteran defense in the Baltimore Ravens.

Dalton will face an angry Ravens defense that was embarrassed last week against the Seattle Seahawks.

Baltimore is third in the league with 27 sacks and lead the NFL with 15 forced fumbles. Dalton struggled against the great Pittsburgh Steelers defense last week and even without the Ray Lewis on Sunday, the Ravens' defense will be equally as challenging for the rookie quarterback.

Don't start Dalton unless you absolutely have to this week.

3. Matthew Stafford

When Matthew Stafford injured his right index finger last week in a bad loss to the Chicago Bears, he was forced to wear a glove.

Things won't get any easier for the Detroit Lions quarterback in Week 11 versus the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers' defense is not great, but they have some talented defensive linemen, like Charles Johnson, and have athletic players in the secondary.

Without starting running back Jahvid Best the last three games, the Lions have averaged just 99 rushing yards per game.

Stafford has no help from the running game, and a few bad hits could be problematic for his finger injury. Given Stafford's health concerns this week, plus his past issues with injuries, I would start someone more reliable this week than the Lions' QB.
