Portland Blazers Game 27: Brandon Roy, AKA Dragonslayer

Bleacher ReportDec 18, 2008

There are those games you keep the ticket to reflect on your experience.

I took the night off work to go to tonight's game between the Portland Blazers and the Phoenix Suns.

Little did I know history was about to be made.

Last year I met Brandon Roy's wife because his personal assistant called me at work to inform me his wife would arrive in a half an hour, and despite how crowded we were, I needed to make space for her.  The man on the phone said that if I made space, they would ask me to drop my name and hook me up with a game ticket for the Memphis game.

I told them not to worry about it, because Brandon works his tail off for this community, and they do not need to ask me favors for favors.  I will hook up B-Roy and his family NO MATTER WHAT.

Listen...I attended every Blazers game between Jan. '06 and Dec. 08.  I was born in Portland (had I not lived in LA, New Mexico, and Manhattan NYC, I would have seen far more...) so this team is a big part of my SOUL.

Anyhow, when I met B-Roy's wife I wanted to tell her my nickname for Brandon...Drangonslayer (which I created in 2007).

In mythology...a Dragonslayer is a young man who protects a small community from the oppressing forces who fly in to cause chaos. (Presumably dragons...in  the NBA guys like Phoenix.)

I never told her that...

The Phoenix Suns (who I watched drop 16 three-point shots at Madison Square Garden) dropped 57% at the Rose Garden.  A record high for an opponent.

Brandon Roy answered with 52 points...a record high for a Blazer at the Rose Garden.

UN-FATHOMABLE!

Thus tonight I watched TWO record high performances...the winning record set by The Dragonslayer.

I cannot say much more, but I will say THIS...

In the third quarter the Blazers were down 12 and the Rose Garden fans were BOO'ING the TERRIBLE calls by the NBA refs.  When I say terrible, almost as bad the Supreme Court appointing George W. Bush to the President.  That said...Phoenix had us DOWN BIG TIME...

And then Brandon Roy ushured all the players towards him, where they had a brief team huddle.  I have NO IDEA what was said, but I presume Brandon was telling the team to not give up.  After that...the Blazers went on a third quarter run that started a party in the Rose Garden which was better than the actual WIN.

We went ahead, and the atmosphere in the Rose Garden the BEST I have EVER SEEN.  These guys danced with their shirts off in the isle, and their dance was a microcosm of the season and the way it has changed our fans.

This win will be a YouTube Highlight for years to come.

I asked my good buddy Willy why the Suns did not pass the ball to Shaq more in the second half, since he killed in the first half.  He said that Shaq and Amare Soudamire were fighting over who gets more possessions...and all I can tell you is that Shaq barely touched the ball in the second half...and watching him walk off that court a loser was a thrill.

Whatev...Shaq is a BUFFOON.

Kudos to Steve Blake (for his unforgettably performance) and Greg Oden for shutting Shaq down in the last minutes of the game.  He had a bit block, he altered Shaq's shot, and he had a BIG TIME rebound to seal the win.

Kudos BIG TIME also to Travis Outlaw.

And for LaMarcus for that late game bank shut with time winding down...

I saw history tonight.

Can we keep this up?

I don't know.

But I do know this...Brandon Roy slays Dragons....

And Dragons are hard to kill.

PEACE YO,.

I'll keep that ticket.
