WWE Survivor Series 2011: WWE Must Not Turn John Cena Heel on The Rock

Brandon GalvinNov 19, 2011

WWE would be foolish to destroy their cash cow, John Cena, by turning him heel on The Rock.

Everyone can complain about Cena’s stale "Superman" gimmick, but he is essential to the company. He is the face of WWE—the man who can do the commercials, talk shows, star in movies, cater to children and parents and be used as the center point for their anti-bullying campaign.

Fans have been yearning for a Cena heel turn for years, but now is most certainly not the right time—and definitely not against The Rock.

If you’ve been paying attention to WWE programming, The Rock has been playing the "heel" character in his feud with Cena.

Rocky’s bashed his morals and his fans relentlessly. He stole Cena’s thunder on RAW when he took out The Miz and R-Truth, without letting Cena throw down his Attitude Adjustment. He even interrupted Mick Foley’s "This is Your Life" segment with Cena and Rock Bottomed his former tag team partner.

Why did The Rock destroy the Hardcore Legend? Foley was promoting Cena and Rocky doesn’t like anything to do with Cena. It makes sense to put the kibosh on such a segment, but it still shows where the People's Champs' state of mind is at right now.

Despite playing off as the heel, he has been cheered far more than Cena. No matter what WWE does, Cena will be booed heavily against Rocky, which is why it doesn’t make sense for WWE to turn Cena now. If the fans will boo Cena as is, it makes zero sense to turn him heel and risk losing Cena’s adolescent fan base and the parents’ cold hard cash.

If Cena attacks The Rock out of nowhere, WWE will lose everything they built.

The only fitting thing to do at Survivor Series is to have The Rock further his feud by taking out Cena with a Rock Bottom. The Rock will be cheered in grand fashion by New York’s raucous crowd if he were to leave Cena high and dry. It would be the spectacle of the year—yes, even better than CM Punk beating Cena at Money in the Bank and running away with the WWE Championship.

If Cena gives The Rock an Attitude Adjustment and storms out of New York City, it won’t have the same effect. It goes against everything Cena and WWE have built within this rivalry. WWE would be left without a top face to make the promotional rounds since Randy Orton doesn’t have the charisma and CM Punk doesn’t have the filter or "wholesome" appeal.

For the sake of the company’s present and near future, WWE must leave Cena as is and not force a heel turn at Survivor Series.
