Top 15 Fights of the NHL Season
Fighting is one of the most exciting parts of an NHL game and the fans love to see two players square off.
This season has seen many quality bouts, including Thursday night's epic fight between Jay Rosehill of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brian McGrattan of the Nashville Predators.
Ottawa Senators forward Zenon Konopka currently leads the NHL with eight fights.
Let's look at the 15 best fights of the hockey season thus far.
15) Jared Boll vs. Shawn Thornton
1 of 15Two experienced fighters in Jared Boll and Shawn Thornton go toe-to-toe in a pretty close bout that I would award Boll the win in.
Thornton is one of the toughest Bruins and fights more than any player on the team.
14) Brandon Prust vs. Tanner Glass
2 of 15I will give Brandon Prust the win here, but Tanner Glass gets a moral victory for putting up a good fight against a more experienced and better fighter.
13) Cody McCormick vs. Travis Moen
3 of 15Credit to the referees for not stopping this fight when Cody McCormick and Travis Moen go to the ice quickly.
McCormick wins this fight, but it still was a pretty good fight.
12) Sheldon Brookbank and Derek Dorsett
4 of 15This was a pretty even bout until Sheldon Brookbank really got going with his left hand, and proved he was the better man in this fight.
Credit Dorsett for still wanting to go after being pummeled by a few lefts.
11) Jordin Tootoo vs. Aaron Volpatti
5 of 15Jordin Tootoo dominates Aaron Volpatti in this fight with a couple strong uppercuts and a ton of tenacity.
These guys went after each other and credit them for not sizing each other up for a minute or two.
10) Mike Brown vs. Tom Kostopoulos
6 of 15Mike Brown wastes no time in defeating Tom Kostopoulos in a fight where both players traded punches.
Unfortunately for Kostopoulos, he got pummeled by a determined Brown who landed a lot of effective right-hand punches.
9) Brian McGrattan vs. George Parros
7 of 15Brian McGrattan and George Parros are two NHL heavyweights and it is clear that McGrattan won this fight.
Parros was in defense mode for most of this lengthy bout.
8) Braydon Coburn vs. Steve Downie
8 of 15This fight had been coming all game, but I have a few problems with it.
Braydon Coburn has a massive height advantage over Steve Downie in this fight, and Coburn knows Downie is hurt toward the end and does not stop.
The linesman was also a little slow in breaking it up.
7) Sheldon Brookbank vs. Derek Dorsett
9 of 15Sheldon Brookbank and Derek Dorsett have a very good fight here and one of the most even fights of the season.
No clear winner here, and not much defense either. Great fight, though, and a thrill to watch.
6) Jay Beagle vs. Arron Asham
10 of 15Arron Asham is not a very big guy, but he destroys Jay Beagle in this fight with two massively effective punches to the face.
Beagle did well to start the fight off in a positive way, but Asham just came in after and pummeled him.
5) Zenon Konopka vs. Mike Brown
11 of 15Zenon Konopka and Mike Brown have a solid bout right here with many punches thrown by each player.
In the end, however, I would give the win to Konopka, who also leads the NHL thus far with eight fighting majors.
4) Cam Janssen vs. Brian McGrattan
12 of 15Brian McGrattan is a great fighter and he uses his superior strength and size to dominate Cam Janssen.
Janssen does make a valiant attempt to hang in there and the fight last over two minutes.
3) Mike Brown vs. Kris Newbury
13 of 15Mike Brown of the Toronto Maple Leafs made real quick work of Kris Newbury right here, and this fight wasn't even close.
Great determination and skills by Brown to land almost all of his punches in such a short amount of time.
2) Tanner Glass vs. Cody McCormick
14 of 15Buffalo Sabres forward Cody McCormick wins this fight, but Winnipeg Jets forward Tanner Glass got some good punches in.
McCormick just wanted it more and finished the bout with a takedown.
1) Jay Rosehill vs. Brian McGrattan
15 of 15Brian McGrattan destroyed Jay Rosehill Thursday night during the Nashville Predators and Toronto Maple Leafs game.
McGrattan pummels Rosehill with many great right-hand punches, and clearly wins this fight. The showboating at the end, like the commentor says, is not needed at all.
