LSU Football: 5 Reasons Why Jordan Jefferson Should Be Team's Starting QB

Sean MerrimanNov 17, 2011

After an offseason bar fight led to the suspension of LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, it was Jarrett Lee who earned the Tigers' starting quarterback duties to open the 2011 college football season.

Lee took the job and ran with it, and with just two regular season games remaining, he has helped lead the Tigers to an undefeated record and the No. 1 ranking in the country.

But if LSU wants to beat Arkansas, win the SEC Championship, and win a third BCS National Championship this decade, Jordan Jefferson needs to be starting under center.

Here are five reasons why LSU's best chances at winning a National Title are with Jefferson at quarterback.

1. He Has Experience in Big Games

Jordan Jefferson has played in some huge games in his collegiate career, and he has won plenty of huge games in his collegiate career.

He beat Georgia, Auburn and Arkansas in his sophomore year, Alabama and Texas A&M (in the Cotton Bowl) in his junior year. He recently played a large role in helping the Tigers beat the Tide in the "Game of the Century" just two weeks ago.

If the Tigers want to make it to the BCS Title Game and win a National Championship, they are in need of a quarterback who has experience and can deliver on the biggest stage.

That quarterback is Jordan Jefferson.

2. He Is Multidimensional

Jarrett Lee is a very skilled passer, but his skill set really doesn't expand much more beyond that.

Jordan Jefferson is also a skilled passer, but unlike Lee, he also has the ability to make big plays with his legs. That has become obvious in his limited playing time throughout this season.

If Jefferson and Lee have similar passing numbers, which they have over the past couple of games, wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense to go with the guy who can also get it done on the ground?

3. He Paid His Dues

3 of 5

When Jordan Jefferson came back from his suspension, LSU coach Les Miles made it clear to him that Jarrett Lee was going to be the team's starting quarterback for the immediate time being.

You never once heard anything about any complaints that came from Jefferson about the matter. And keep in mind, Jefferson was expected to be the starter for the Tigers in his much-anticipated senior season.

Jefferson has served his time as a backup, never complained, and delivered when he was called upon.

Now, he has rightfully earned his starting job back.

4. He Comes Up Big When They Need Him

4 of 5

It is no secret that the "Game of the Century" between Alabama and LSU was anything but exciting if you like offense.

But, when Jarrett Lee struggled to get anything going, the Tigers called upon Jordan Jefferson, and he filled in very nicely. Jefferson completed 6-of-10 passes for 67 yards and rushed for another 43 yards while helping lead the Tigers to the win.

On the other end, Lee was just 3-of-7 for 24 yards and threw two costly interceptions.

It's hard to argue against Jefferson after that game.

5. He Gives Them the Best Chance to Win

5 of 5

If the LSU Tigers want to win a National Title, it really is as simple as this: put Jordan Jefferson behind center.

We saw how Jarrett Lee did against Alabama, and if the Tigers' are fortunate enough to reach the National Title game, they will probably face a team as talented as Alabama.

Lee still deserves to play. But right now, this should be Jefferson's team, and the only way to make that obvious is to give him the starting nod from here on out.

Jefferson has to be the starter if LSU wants to bring home its third National Championship Trophy over the past 10 years.
