Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: 10 Reasons This Still Probably Won't Happen

Justin TateNov 18, 2011

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are the pinnacle of the sport and many want them to collide in an explosion of starpower and skill, but the forces that be have kept them apart.

Egos? Random drug testing? Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer? No one knows every single reason this fight hasn't happened yet (there are THAT many), but here are 10 reasons it still may not happen.

10. Money

1 of 10

The two haven't had enough of banking off each other's names. People compare their performances and hang on their every word in post-fight interviews to see if they'll mention each other as the next opponent.

That generates more interest than usual and causes people to flock to stadiums, arenas and bars to see them. No matter who they face next, people will be watching.

Why blow that rocketship of money now when it could build up some more?

9. Unfinished Business

2 of 10

Pacquiao is not impressed with his performance against Juan Manuel Marquez in their third bout.

Conditioning coach Ariza, trainer Freddie Roach, promoter Bob Arum and frequent sparring partner Amir Khan all believe Pacquiao was not at his best when clashing with Marquez in their third fight.

Does that mean have a fourth? Arum believes so and he wants it to happen. Will Pacquiao say no and press for the fight with Mayweather?

8. Pacquiao's Wife and Family

3 of 10

Pacquiao loves boxing, but he also loves his family and would likely do what they tell him. His wife seems comfortable with his career when interviewed, but is she still confident in her husband's ability?

After his performance against Marquez where Pacquiao suffered a deep cut and looked puzzled at times as he took shots, is Mrs. Pacquiao becoming worried?

She may believe that if small Marquez can hurt her husband, maybe the bigger Mayweather can do worse. If she believes so, she may ask that he retire soon and forget about the big fight. Will Pacquiao listen?

7. Injuries

4 of 10

Mayweather is prone to hand injuries and has broken ribs.

Pacquiao has leg cramps. No one likes to compete against their greatest rival without first being given time to properly recover.

Can Pacquiao and Mayweather stay healthy and push out a good enough performance in training to justify facing each other before either one of them retires?

6. Mayweather's Alter Ego

5 of 10

Mayweather loves money, hence his nickname, "Money." If it doesn't make dollars, then it don't make sense. That's a motto Mayweather likely uses and believes.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather makes sense, but perhaps making the wait a little longer could get more people caught up in the hype.

This could definitely cause the end of the reality of the superfight between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

5. Freddie Roach

6 of 10

Roach may not feel Manny is ready yet, and thus may keep on working him until he feels ready.

Roach knows when it's the right time to fully take advantage of a fighter past his prime or smaller foe. Khan's young enough to have the physical advantages against Pacquiao and Mayweather, who are likely aging past their primes.

4. Drug-Testing Protocol

7 of 10

Mayweather wants drug testing to be random and to test blood and urine.

After so many different variations of the story as to what number of random tests will be needed and whether it's necessary, Casamayor recently got caught with marijuana.

He may not be able fight in early 2012 with a suspension, but he'll be back in November of next year if he so chooses (I'd prefer he retire).

This will only act as a big-name example of the substance use in boxing that Mayweather may preach about to get his drug testing into reality against boxinf's.

3. Bob Arum

8 of 10

Mayweather and Arum had a turbulent relationship. The relationship was so toxic that Mayweather bought out his contract.

Now for them to come together to make a big fight, they'll have to respect each other.

Though Arum may not always give the undefeated fighter his due, Arum will have to make nice to make fight.

2. Self-Doubt

9 of 10

Does Pacquiao believe he'll win? If so, why didn't he just take the Mayweather fight—likely the most lucrative fight in their careers.

Does Mayweather believe he'll win? If so, why does he need random drug testing?

1. Father Time

10 of 10

Sure, the fight will happen, but will it really be the "superfight" if the fighters are 33 and 35 years old?

Is it really the "dreamfight" if both fighters are past their prime and their bedtime?

As Mayweather buys his dentures and Pacquiao goes around shopping for canes, fans continually debate who would win.

These men are both aging at what seems to be a slow rate, but fighters age overnight all the time when they face warriors who are on their level.

Will the same happen to Pacquiao and Mayweather or will the two still be the same fighters of old who can put on an amazing show of skill and bravery for the fans?
