WWE Survivor Series 2011: Can Cena and The Rock Maintain WrestleMania Momentum?

Tim DanielsNov 19, 2011

The biggest concern that nearly the entire WWE Universe had, when The Rock and John Cena announced their WrestleMania clash earlier this year, was whether they could keep a rivalry fresh over such a long period.

It's difficult enough to keep the audience interested in a storyline for two months—let alone 12.

But this is something different, something special. More than seven months have passed since the announcement was made and anticipation for the fight is still burning bright.

As crazy as it sounds, having The Rock bring it via satellite has helped more than anything.

By continuing to work on a myriad of movies, he's been able to stay out of the WWE spotlight while other stars like CM Punk and Mark Henry have taken center stage.

Every now and then, Rocky will pop up on the TitanTron with a message for Cena—just to make sure that seed is still firmly planted in everyone's mind. He's also used his insanely popular Twitter feed to take weekly jabs at the "Fruit Loop Troop."

A compelling feud between Punk and Cena also helped burn up a lot of time during the summer months, which can often be a slow period for WWE. So it's really been a combination of good booking and timely appearances by The Rock.

What will happen following WWE's Survivor Series?

Many people are worried that The Rock's return to the ring might ruin the excitement of WrestleMania. I don't think that will be the case—there is probably a twist planned for Sunday night to build additional tension before April Fools' Day 2012.

The Miz and R-Truth need to continue their run of destruction in order to help further storylines, especially once the People's Champ gets back to his day job.

So expect the unexpected on Sunday. No matter what happens, it shouldn't have any long-term negative effect on Rock and Cena's preeminent feud.

Cena vs. Rock isn't just a wrestling match, but a battle of eras. There's really nothing that could slow it down. Not even time.
