Shonn Greene Injury: Update on the New York Jets Star's Ribs Injury

Eric BallNov 17, 2011

The New York Jets were already without LaDainan Tomlinson for Thursday Night Football against the New York Jets, then they lost Shonn Grenne in the first quarter against the Denver Broncos.

He injured his ribs in the first quarter with 3:24 remaining after catching a 4-yard pass from QB Mark Sanchez. Grenne left the field and went straight to the locker room.

Greene is a must-start back in a year where they are very hard to come by. Losing him for any sort of extended amount of time is going to be brutal. Using a receiver in your flex spot may have to be the move depending on your running back depth.

Who’s the Backup?

With LT also M.I.A with a sprained left knee, Joe McKnight is now the main back for the Jets ground-and-pound attack. Rookie Bilal Powell was activated for the first time this season and is the de-facto backup for the rest of the game.

Devastation Scale: 7/10

When your two main backs are out with an injury, that's not a good thing. Greene was just beginning to get on a roll recently, and it allowed Mark Sanchez and the Jets' offense to really open up the field.

It's hard to imagine the Jets making the playoffs without Greene back in the lineup soon.

What They’re Saying:

Sounds like the injury isn’t too severe according to Michael Fabiano of The NFL Network:

Timeline for Return:

It's too early to tell if Greene is going to miss next week's game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 12, but if he is able to stand on the sidelines in a cold environment right after suffering the injury, it must not be too severe.

I'd guess he'd be healthy enough to go next week after being tagged with the dreaded "questionable" tag for the next 10 days.
