Bowl Projections: Houston and More Teams Looking to Crash the BCS Party

John FrielNov 17, 2011

The 2011 NCAA football regular season is ending, and with the majority of teams only having two opponents to look forward to before bowl season starts up, we'll take a look at which teams could possibly crash the BCS party with a few wins and a little luck.

These teams haven't always been at top of the rankings, AP or BCS, but they could possibly sneak in if a few things go in their favor over the next two or three weeks.

11. Houston (10-0, 6-0)

Along with LSU and Oklahoma State, the Houston Cougars find themselves as one of only three teams left with an undefeated record. The Cougars haven't had the most difficult schedule, with possibly their biggest competition coming in Week 1 against UCLA, but there's no argument that the Cougars are beating who they need to beat and winning by margins that almost seem far-fetched.

The Cougars possess the nation's top offense, averaging nearly 55 points per game, and are supported by quarterback Case Keenum, who has propelled Houston as the number one passing team. They've only scored fewer than 40 points twice this year, and have scored over 56 points in the past five games, exceeding 70 points in two of those games.

Houston won't be given too many opportunities to prove themselves, so they'll just have to beat the tar out of 6-4 SMU and 7-3 Tulsa. Both teams are quality opponents by C-USA standards, and could have the Cougars in a BCS game if they beat them by a large enough margin to warrant some attention from the BCS.

14. Georgia (8-2, 6-1)

Don't look now, but that Bulldogs team that started out 0-2 has now won eight consecutive games, and is coming off of a 38-point victory against SEC rival Auburn, who also happens to be ranked no. 24 in the country. The Tigers were the first ranked team that the Bulldogs have faced since their Week 2 loss to South Carolina, and have proved themselves since then with impressive wins over Mississippi and Mississippi State.

Georgia has been ignored for the most part since dropping their first two games of the season to Boise State and South Carolina, but have been receiving national attention since their latest win of the season, in which they absolutely dominated a relatively good Auburn team.

They have another tune-up game against 4-6 Kentucky, and then finish the season against 7-3 Georgia Tech. Big wins against both of those teams would have the Bulldogs at the top of the SEC East and in contention for one of the upper-tier bowl games in January.

13. Kansas State (8-2, 5-2)

The Kansas State Wildcats started the season off slow with a three-point win over I-AA opponent Eastern Kentucky. Following that close call, the Wildcats would go on to win six consecutive games, with quality wins over Miami, Baylor and Kansas. The only problem was that they had to deal with Oklahoma, and that turned out to be ugly, with a 58-17 loss to a team that's one fluke loss away from being in the title game.

The Wildcats would go on to lose one more game, which came against the current no. 2 team in Oklahoma State who escaped with a 52-45 victory. Kansas State then avoided an upset in the very next game by besting 5-5 Texas A&M in four overtimes by a score of 53-50.

If the Wildcats want to make it to a BCS game, they're going to have to annihilate the Texas Longhorns on the road before defeating Iowa State in the final game of the season. The Wildcats had the misfortune of being in a Big 12 Conference that has played extremely well this season, and they should warrant some attention just for winning eight of their first 10 games.
