WWE Survivor Series 2011: Why Alberto Del Rio Needs to Beat CM Punk Sunday

David LevinNov 17, 2011

The writing is on the wall for Alberto Del Rio.

The current WWE Champion is not a fan favorite, hated by the masses, and thought of in the same terms of some of the most loathed wrestlers of all time.

Because of that "lofty" status, it is Del Rio who has to shine this weekend at Survivor Series against the "Straight Edge Superstar," CM Punk. Never has a championship match (or both world title matches) been so poorly populated in a PPV event.

Well, with The Rock and John Cena headlining, it is a shame that the world titles take a backseat to anything or anyone. But they do.

Del Rio is "John Cena" vanilla right now. Same look, same attitude, same approach. Same damn ring announcer. (I still vote for the Bella Twins.) Even John Laurinaitis grew some stones (or pebbles) this past week and told him how plain he was. Oh, wow. I actually liked Laurinaitis for a moment.

In other words, Del Rio needs this match more than Punk.

Del Rio needs the victory for many reasons, the first being there is nowhere for him to go if he is not holding the title. Fans do not want to see him wrestle to gain top contender status again. They do not want to see him bitch, whine and complain about lost opportunities.

Oh, wow...he's a Mexican version of Christian.

Del Rio is a good technical wrestler and I keep waiting for the day Rey Mysterio comes back to face the Mexican Aristocrat. Hopefully that can happen at WrestleMania.

He has no true connection to the "conspiracy" and no connection to Laurinaitis, Vickie Guerrero, or anyone else.

So winning this weekend is all he can do to cement himself as the top heel on Raw and maybe the most hated man in the WWE.
