Week 12 College Football Predictions: Top 25 Teams That Won't Cover Spread
There is no way Virginia Tech is going to cover the spread against North Carolina. They will not be alone. They are one of three Top 25 favorites that is not going to cover in Week 12.
North Carolina at Virginia Tech
Spread: VT -11
The Hokies are as unimpressive a No. 8 team as you'll ever see.
They have a weak offense, and are ranked just 47th in the nation in points scored per game. They are a run heavy team, and rely on the ground attack to get their offense going.
They will have a hard time running against a North Carolina defense that is allowing just 3.14 yards per carry.
This will help North Carolina keep the score down.
So, while North Carolina (60th in points per game) will have a hard time moving the ball on a stiff Hokies defense (8th in points allowed per game) the low score of this one will help them stay within 11 points of Virginia Tech.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 17, North Carolina 10
Oklahoma at Baylor
Spread: Oklahoma -15
Fifteen points is too big a spread for this one. Oklahoma has a dynamic offense. They are ranked sixth in points allowed per game, but Baylor's offense is just behind them—ranked 11th in points per game.
Oklahoma clearly has the superior defense in this game. They are 21st in the nation in points allowed per game, but they have created that success on the strength of a dominant rush defense. That won't help them much in this one.
Robert Griffin will be able to find holes in the Oklahoma secondary. Baylor has thrown for 3212 yards this season. Oklahoma has allowed 2096 passing yards.
The Sooners pass defense has succeeded by generating 11 interceptions. However, Griffin is amazingly efficient and he seldom throws a pick.
He has just five interceptions to 29 touchdowns.
This will be a high scoring contest that is in doubt late into the game.
Prediction: Oklahoma 42, Baylor 35
Mississippi State at Arkansas
Spread: Arkansas -13.5
Arkansas high powered offense will not be enough to lead the Razorbacks to a two touchdown victory in this matchup.
Arkansas is 13th in the nation in points scored per game. They have accomplished that largely on the strength of a great passing game. They have thrown for 3,113 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.
But they will be going against a very good Bull Dogs defense. Mississippi State is 17th in the nation in points allowed per game.
They have been especially stiff against the pass, which will be key for this game. They have allowed 1,856 passing yards on the season, and just 12 touchdowns while hauling in nine interceptions.
This defense will help the Bulldogs keep Arkansas within striking distance.
Prediction: Arkansas 27, Mississippi State 20
