Joe Rogan Says Velasquez Overestimated His Own Striking Against Dos Santos

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez lost his title to Junior Dos Santos on Saturday night, and although some were critical over the previously unbeaten fighter's performance, UFC commentator Joe Rogan thinks he just made a "mistake."

“It was an amazing fight,” Rogan said in an interview with TATAME.com after the fight. “Well, you know, he [Junior] has brilliant timing. He has great timing and great knockout power, and he did exactly what he wanted to do. For him, it was the win with a perfect fight. He picked a spot, found an opening, landed and boom—that was it.”

The bout was selected as the first UFC fight to be shown on network television. An hour-long feature on FOX gave casual viewers their first glimpse at mixed-martial-arts. After a 35-minute introduction to the fighters in the main event, the fight lasted 64 seconds before Dos Santos was declared the new UFC heavyweight champion.

“I think if I was Cain Velasquez’s coach, if I would say, if he need some area, he should’ve tried to take Junior down, he should try to tire Junior out," Rogan said. "But to try to stand with him...I think he overestimated his striking, and Junior is one of the best, if not the best boxer in mixed martial arts."

Rogan also said he would be attending the Jan. 14 event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“I couldn’t do the last one, but I’ll be there on this one," said Rogan, who was unable to commentate at the previous UFC in Brazil due to a scheduling conflict with the taping of Fear Factor.
