WWE: Why Haven't the Tag Titles Been Vacated by AirBoom?

Justin EldridgeNov 15, 2011

Hey fellow Bleachers!

There has been something on my mind that I haven't been able to fully answer myself in regards to AirBoom. If all WWE titles have a clause that requires a title to be defended within 30 days or be forfeited—and Evan Bourne has been suspended for 30 days—why haven't they vacated the titles?

The short answer is: "They should have."

I get that his suspension for a wellness policy violation required immediate suspension, but they could have made a story up as to why he was off of TV. Even if they had given him a storyline injury, they could have vacated the titles and then challenged for them once Bourne returned from suspension.

Exactly what kind of message does this send to the fans, anyways? A WWE star was caught smoking pot, but because he has a fan base of little kids, we better not pay it any attention and all will be forgotten when he returns. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but many people will look at it that way. It's not my place to judge, and I honestly could not care less if Evan Bourne smokes weed.

But that's a whole different topic.

My focus now is who could hold the tag titles until Bourne returns to challenge for the belts with Kofi again.

There are not many superstars who could lay claim to earning the right to hold the tag titles except for Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger. They were the closest any team has come to taking the belts from AirBoom during their reign. These two could be a fantastic tag team but are better suited for singles competition.

I personally wouldn't want to see the belts just handed to a team, though. My thoughts would be to hold a tournament over several weeks for the tag titles. Many people are clamoring to have the secondary belts mean something again, and what better way to make the tag titles important than to have a tournament to determine the next tag champs?

It kind of writes itself.

AirBoom is stripped of the titles by John Laurinaitis. He comes up with a tournament to determine the next champs. Heel team wins the belts and Kofi and Evan return to chase the titles. Booking at its simplest.

The only thing left would be to fill the tournament with teams. Here are some I would like to see:

1. Awesome Truth - Laurinaitis' boys. My pick to win if they enter the tournament, plus they would lend some credibility to the tournament, as both are revolving around the main event scene.

2. The Uso's - If they get a bit more serious and stop dancing in the ring, these guys could go a long way. Keep the Haka as part of the entrance, though. That stuff is sweet.

3. Tyson Kidd and Tyler Reks - Two stars with untapped potential so far. A classic combination of speed in Kidd and power in Reks.

4. Hunico and Epico and Primo - Lots of potential here as well. The three could go to the ever awesome "Freebird Rule" used by many teams over the years. Also, the double team moves I have seen these three pull off in their short time together could make some sick finishers.

5. Christian and Drew McIntyre - Christian is a VERY decorated tag wrestler and Drew could benefit immensely from a partnership with Captain Charisma. Two very talented individuals who could win it all.

Obviously, there could be many more teams and different combinations of superstars to make teams up, but I feel that this could be a huge step in making many characters in the WWE more relevant to the fans and give them and the tag belts much more exposure.

I welcome opinions and comments on anything I wrote about here from stripping the champs of the titles to teams you would like to see compete and who you would like to see win a tag team tournament.
