Jerry Sandusky Lawyer: Report Says Joe Amendola Impregnated 16-Year-Old

Mike ChiariNov 15, 2011

As if there weren't already enough twists and turns in the case of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, the credibility of his lawyer Joe Amendola is now being called into question.

According to The Daily, Amendola has a much younger wife named Mary. Apparently, when Amendola was representing her in an attempt to gain emancipation from her parents at the age of 16, he impregnated her, and has since married her.

The two have since separated, but if there is any validity to the report, then it most certainly calls into question Amendola's credibility, particularly when he is currently defending Sandusky in a case involving sexual abuse against children.

While I'm sure the jury will be asked to disregard such information in a trial as it has nothing to do with Sandusky himself, I have to imagine it will weigh on their minds a bit. Amendola has been a contributor to Sandusky's Second Mile Foundation which is where Sandusky allegedly met and sexually abused young boys.

Seeing as Sandusky and Amendola have long had a personal relationship, the jury may deduce that they share similar moral codes. With that said, even if these reports of Amendola impregnating a 16 year-old are completely false, the notion of it may be enough to sway some people toward convicting Sandusky.

Say what you will about Sandusky escaping conviction as the odds are already incredibly long in all likelihood, but this only serves to hurt his case. Essentially everything his legal counsel has done to this point has dug him a deeper hole, including this news and allowing him to be interviewed by Bob Costas on Rock Center.

If this news is, in fact, true, then you also have to wonder how Amendola has been allowed to continue practicing law, unless he has been able to keep it under wraps up to this point. It may not be directly related to Sandusky's case, but this certainly reflects badly upon everyone involved.

Just when it seemed like it was impossible for more controversy to surface, this comes to the forefront. In one respect it may be taking some of the focus off Sandusky at the moment, but it will ultimately be yet another strike against Sandusky's team as the trial looms.
