Luke Fickell Press Conference: OSU Head Coach Steers Clear of Penn State Scandal
The Jerry Sandusky scandal has infected the fabric of Penn State and stirred up all sorts of emotions from people around the country because of the sad and graphic details of the case. Opposing head coaches get asked questions about it, but, at least in the case of Ohio State's Luke Fickell, they don't always have to answer them.
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Fickell was asked a few questions about Penn State and the off-field incident that has made headlines for the last eight days. But he declined to dive deep into the subject. The only thing that Fickell said on the subject was a generic comment about how players respond to adversity and external distractions in preparing for a game.
"Young people are very resilient, and sometimes they have a loss or situation that happens," Fickell said. "They get over it, probably a lot quicker than some of us older people. They do a good job of moving on."
Not exactly the most scintillating stuff, but considering the circumstances, probably the smartest thing he could say. At least he did not pull a Bret Bielema and say that it was a good time to be an Ohio State fan.
Opposing coaches are going to get asked about Penn State for the rest of this season and probably for the first few weeks in 2012, but it is not a topic that needs to be talked about in that kind of forum. It's easy to understand why the media asks about it, but these coaches are not going to address it in any way. We all feel the same way about the allegations levied against Sandusky and about Penn State's action or lack thereof when administrators had suspicions, so there is no need to pry a coach to get his take on it.
Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini didn't really dive into the situation last week, though he did say that the game should not have been played.
Fickell did not dive into the situation because there really is nothing to say. More coaches are going to be asked about it, and they will all say the same thing.
