Manchester City Face Newcastle United in Clash of Invincibles

Daniel MoreheadNov 15, 2011

Newcastle United travel to East Manchester this Saturday in a clash which pits the only remaining unbeaten sides in the English Premier League against each other.

Following a summer filled with off-field turmoil, Newcastle's current high position in the Premier League was unthinkable. Going into this weekend's fixtures, the Geordies sit in third place–one position and three points about title contenders Chelsea–in the automatic Champions League qualification berth which Manchester City themselves finished the 2010-11 season in.

Although few expect Alan Pardew's men to keep up these lofty heights throughout the duration of the season, there is no denying the impressive first quarter of the campaign.

Table-topping Manchester City pose the toughest test so far to Newcastle's European credentials, with the Etihad Stadium an imposing venue as City continue to stamp their goal-frenzied authority upon the Premier League.

Manchester City have won all five of their home games so far this term, scoring 16 goals with the opposition replying only twice. Newcastle have relied on a tight defensive unit on their travels, winning three of their five away league games, drawing the remaining two. Conceding only three times after five trips on the road is impressive, although the seven goals scored could cause problems at the home of a team with an overall goal difference 20 superior.

Coincidentally, both teams have gone 14 league games since losing (stretching into the previous season), promoting the possibility of both teams lengthening their unbeaten runs. With trips to the Etihad Stadium, Old Trafford then the home visit of Chelsea, Newcastle face a tough run of fixtures, but with Edin Dzeko (10 league goals), Sergio Aguero (nine league goals) and Mario Balotelli (five league goals) on the horizon, a different trio will be currently occupying the thoughts of the Toon faithful.
