Jerry Sandusky Interview: No Need for a Lie Detector Test After NBC Interview

Ryan RudnanskyNov 15, 2011

A man is innocent until he is proven guilty in America, but former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky certainly didn't do himself any favors on NBC News' "Rock Center" on Monday leading up to his trial in December.

Sandusky, who faces 40 counts of sexual abuse against young boys, has been the centerpiece of a historic scandal at Penn State.

That's why it was shocking that he answered questions from Bob Costas during the nine-minute clip.

The result, well, was predictable. Sandusky struggled through the entire interview, straining to find the right words and saying the wrong words when he did speak.

When asked about the allegations brought upon him, Sandusky said such things as, "I have done some of those things," or he spit out the classic, "I do not recall."

When asked about a 2002 incident in which current receivers coach Mike McQueary allegedly saw Sandusky raping a 10-year-old boy in one of Penn State's locker room showers while hearing rhythmic slapping sounds, Sandusky explained the sounds as the boy sliding across the floor and the slapping of towels during "horseplay."

Not exactly the image he wants to create: a man in his 60s engaging in "horseplay" with a young boy in a shower, slapping a towel around.

Costas went on to say, "If all these accusations are false, you are the unluckiest and most persecuted man that any of us has ever heard about."

To that, Sandusky said, "I don't know what you want me to say. I don't think these have been the best days of my life."

An innocent man would have been outraged and said Costas was absolutely right, that he was the "unluckiest and most persecuted man any of us has ever heard."

Sandusky simply didn't have any words.

Again, innocent until proven guilty, but Sandusky appeared more of the latter on Monday night.
